ONGC: Double Hydrocarbon Reserves, 10GW Renewables

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is embarking on an ambitious dual transformation, signaling a clear strategic pivot designed to secure its foundational hydrocarbon business while aggressively expanding into renewable energy. The company has articulated a robust roadmap to double its hydrocarbon reserves by 2032 and achieve a significant 10 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy capacity by 2030. This strategic balancing act aims to position ONGC as a key player in India’s evolving energy landscape, addressing both immediate energy security needs and long-term sustainability goals. For investors, this presents a complex but potentially rewarding proposition, blending the resilience of established fossil fuel production with the growth potential of green energy.

Reinforcing the Core: Hydrocarbon Expansion Amidst Market Dynamics

ONGC’s commitment to its core business remains unequivocal, with a firm target to double its hydrocarbon reserves over the next decade. This objective is underpinned by tangible operational successes, including a turnaround in production with a 1 percent growth in standalone crude oil output for FY25, coupled with a notable slowdown in the decline rate of gas production during the same period. The company’s exploration efforts are bearing fruit, evidenced by nine new discoveries in FY25, comprising seven prospects and two pool discoveries, with four in Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) blocks. Furthermore, ONGC set a new record by drilling 578 wells, surpassing the 544 wells drilled in FY22.

This upstream vigor unfolds against a backdrop of fluctuating global commodity markets. As of today, Brent crude trades at $98.38, reflecting a modest dip of 1.02% from its daily open, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stands at $89.89, down 1.4%. This immediate-term softness, however, follows a more pronounced retreat in Brent from $108.01 just three weeks ago on March 26th, to $94.58 on April 15th, before its current modest recovery. Such volatility underscores the strategic imperative for robust upstream development. ONGC’s substantial investment plan of ₹66,175 crore across 21 major projects, including key initiatives like the KG-DWN-98/2 Cluster-II, Daman Upside, and Development of DSF-II, is projected to yield a lifecycle gain of 77.517 million tonnes of oil and oil-equivalent gas. These projects are critical to not only bolstering reserves but also to securing India’s energy supply amidst ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and shifting demand patterns.

The Green Pivot: Aggressive Renewable Targets and Strategic Investments

Beyond its traditional strengths, ONGC is making a forceful entry into the renewable energy sector, signaling a clear intent to diversify its portfolio and align with national and global climate objectives. The company aims to achieve an impressive 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, a target that places it among the most ambitious energy transition players in the region. Complementing this, ONGC has laid out a roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2038, backed by an substantial investment outlay of approximately ₹1,00,000 crore. This substantial capital commitment underscores the seriousness of its energy transition strategy, which will be pursued through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions.

The groundwork for this green pivot is already visible. Through its subsidiary, ONGC Green Limited, the company has actively expanded its renewable footprint. In FY25, it completed the acquisition of 288.8 MW of wind assets from PTC Energy Ltd and secured 4.1 GW of solar and wind assets from Ayana Renewable Power Pvt Ltd through its joint venture with NTPC Green Energy Ltd. These strategic moves have propelled ONGC’s total renewable energy portfolio to 2.338 GW, providing a solid foundation for future growth. This strategic expansion into renewables is not merely an environmental mandate but a calculated business decision, positioning ONGC to capitalize on India’s burgeoning energy demand by developing a future-ready portfolio that simultaneously supports national climate goals and long-term shareholder value.

Operational Momentum and Financial Health Check

ONGC’s operational achievements in FY25 are notable, with the company progressing on 21 major projects, which include nine development and twelve infrastructure initiatives. These projects are crucial for realizing the projected lifecycle gains and ensuring the sustained flow of hydrocarbons. The increased drilling activity, evidenced by the highest-ever 578 wells drilled, directly contributes to reserve accretion and future production capacity, demonstrating robust operational execution.

From a financial perspective, ONGC reported a consolidated total income of ₹6,75,656 crore in FY25, an increase from ₹6,65,201 crore in FY24, indicating healthy revenue generation. Revenue from operations stood at ₹6,63,262 crore. However, investors will note a decline in profit after tax (PAT) from ₹55,273 crore in the previous year to ₹38,329 crore. Despite this dip in PAT, the company’s total equity rose to ₹3,74,235 crore, and EBITDA remained strong at ₹1,02,290 crore, signaling underlying financial resilience. The total debt of ₹1,53,556 crore, while substantial, must be viewed in the context of the massive planned investments in both hydrocarbon expansion and the aggressive push into renewables. Managing this debt effectively while funding significant capital expenditure will be a key area for investor scrutiny moving forward.

Navigating the Future: Investor Outlook and Upcoming Market Drivers

Investors are keenly monitoring the future direction of crude prices and the stability of global supply, frequently asking about current Brent prices and the implications of OPEC+ decisions for the broader market. This vigilance is particularly relevant as we approach critical upcoming events that could significantly sway market sentiment and commodity valuations. The market is poised for the OPEC+ Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) meeting this Saturday, April 18th, followed by the full Ministerial Meeting on Monday, April 20th. These gatherings will provide crucial insights into production quotas and collective supply strategy, directly influencing short-to-medium term price dynamics for both Brent and WTI crude.

For ONGC, these external market forces play a pivotal role, but its diversified strategy positions it uniquely. By simultaneously doubling down on hydrocarbon reserves and aggressively expanding its renewable portfolio, ONGC aims to build a more resilient business model. This dual approach could help mitigate the impact of crude price volatility, a concern frequently voiced by investors. Should OPEC+ decide to maintain or even increase production cuts, potentially pushing crude prices higher, ONGC’s enhanced hydrocarbon output would benefit. Conversely, if global demand softens or supply increases, its growing renewable segment provides a hedge and a pathway to more stable, long-term revenue streams aligned with India’s energy transition. The company’s strategic focus on exploration in new basins, alongside its rapid renewable expansion, underscores a pragmatic vision to meet India’s escalating energy demand through a balanced and future-ready portfolio.
