Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) members launched an indefinite blockade of Oil India Limited (OIL) vehicles at Bordubi in Tinsukia district on Saturday, protesting the deplorable condition of the Tinsukia-Duliajan road and the Bahadur Chariali-Bahadur Tea Estate road.
The agitation, centered at Bahadur Chariali, resulted in scores of OIL tankers and other company vehicles remaining stranded on the road as activists prevented their movement.
The AJYCP alleged that hundreds of heavy OIL vehicles, including tankers, ply these two roads daily, causing severe wear and tear that has left the routes riddled with potholes and craters. “The constant movement of heavy OIL vehicles has completely destroyed these roads. What were once motorable roads have now become death traps for commuters,” AJYCP alleged.
According to them, locals, including students, patients, businessmen, and daily commuters, have been bearing the brunt of the deteriorating road infrastructure.
The protesters argued that since OIL’s heavy vehicles are primarily responsible for the road damage, the company should take immediate responsibility for repairs rather than deflecting blame to the PWD.
OIL did not issue an official statement regarding the blockade or the allegations till the filing of the report.
