New Delhi: Public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) added 10.7 lakh new domestic LPG customers in the April–June quarter of FY 2025-26, taking the total active customer base to 33.05 crore as of July 1, 2025, according to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

During the quarter, total LPG sales stood at about 7.7 million metric tonnes (MMT), an increase of 8.8 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Packed domestic LPG consumption, which accounted for nearly 89 per cent of sales, rose by 8 per cent year-on-year. The current average daily consumption was reported at 84.3 thousand metric tonnes (TMT).

The three state-run OMCs—Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation—operated 25,573 LPG distributorships nationwide. Each distributor catered to an average of 12,925 active domestic customers, with the southern region recording the highest load per distributor at 14,517.

The report further stated that OMCs operated 213 LPG bottling plants with a combined rated capacity of 23.05 million tonnes per annum. Gross LPG tankage capacity stood at 1,423 TMT, equivalent to 17 days of national cover against current demand.

In the automotive segment, sales of Auto LPG stood at 17.1 TMT in Q1, with 85 per cent of volumes coming from the southern region. A total of 413 Auto LPG dispensing stations were in operation at the end of June 2025.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched in 2016 to provide LPG connections to women from below-poverty-line households, has reached 10.33 crore beneficiaries as of July 1, 2025. The eastern region accounted for the highest share at 32.4 per cent, followed by the northern region at 29.7 per cent and the western region at 21.5 per cent.

Parallel marketeers sold 542.9 TMT of LPG during Q1 FY 2025-26, accounting for 6.6 per cent of total sales. Their contribution was significantly higher in bulk and transport segments, with market shares of 61.1 per cent and 79.4 per cent respectively.

A senior petroleum and natural gas ministry official said, “The steady growth in LPG penetration and the continued addition of new customers reflect both the success of schemes like PMUY and the expansion of distribution networks by OMCs. Going ahead, balancing affordability with supply security will remain a key focus.”
