The Energy NL Conference & Exhibition 2025 continued in St. John’s on Wednesday, and began with an update from Jeff Murphy, Vice President Capital Projects with North Atlantic, who spoke about the recently announced negotiations with ExxonMobil France Holding SAS to purchase the Gravenchon refinery complex.

Jeff Jeworski, Senior Vice President Atlantic for Cenovus Energy, provided an update on the company’s recent activities with a focus on the West White Rose Project and the recent tow-out of the Concrete Gravity Structure completed in Argentina. Sessions then continued with a discussion on how technology such as additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence can be employed in the energy industry, reducing lag time and providing innovative solutions for success.

Lunch keynote Jackie Forrest, Executive Director of ARC Energy Research Institute, discussed the need for streamlined regulations to attract investment into the offshore oil and gas industry so it can achieve its significant potential. The day concluded with an afternoon session focused on grids, renewable energy and power transmission.

The final day (Thursday, June 5) of the Energy NL Conference & Exhibition 2025 will begin with an address from the Honourable John Hogan, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier Hogan will be followed by a morning keynote address from Goldy Hyder, President and CEO of the Business Council of Canada.

Tore Løseth, Country Director for Equinor Canada, will also provide an update on their activities in Canada, including the Bay du Nord Project.

Discussion on the day will also focus on market diversification and how the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry can utilize its strategic advantages to navigate the impending challenges ahead in terms of the global marketplace and protectionist trade approaches. The conference sessions will conclude with a look at how regulations have impacted the industry and how best to overcome the regulatory impasse that has impeded industry growth.

The keynote lunch address for Thursday will be provided by Clint Davis, CEO of Cedar Leaf Capital, the first Indigenous owned and led investment dealer in Canada.

“Discussion today at the Energy NL Conference & Exhibition 2025 was frank and insightful,” said Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO. “It started with a look at North Atlantic’s steps to enter the European market and included an in-depth discussion on the current state of the Newfoundland and Labrador wind to hydrogen industry and where projects, and the industry overall, stand in context of the global hydrogen market.

“The discussion on the role of technology in the future of the industry was valuable to our members, many of which are considering how additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence can be implemented in their day-to-day activities,” Johnson continued. “I look forward to hearing from Premier John Hogan tomorrow as he outlines his vision for the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry, as well as session discussions on market diversification and regulatory impasse. The discussion with Clint Davis of Cedar Leaf Capital should also be deeply informative for our members who want to learn more about engaging with Indigenous communities and organizations. I am confident the engaging discussions of the last two days will continue.”
