New Delhi: India’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant with a multi-distribution model has commenced commercial gas offtake and injection into the city gas distribution (CGD) network in Kaithal, Haryana, with a capacity of 10 tonnes per day (TPD), according to a statement from the plant developer.
The facility, developed by Demeter Agro Energies in collaboration with CEID Consultants and Engineering as its EPC partner and supported by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), will supply compressed biogas through MDPE-rated pipelines and stainless steel lines, and support bottling via cylinder cascades.
The plant is supplying 4 TPD of compressed biogas through the MDPE pipeline network. The total production capacity includes 25,000 cubic meters per day of raw biogas and 10 TPD of compressed biogas.
The commissioning was attended by Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Managing Director, IGL; Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial), IGL; Sanjeev Kumar Bhatia, Executive Director, IGL; and Ashish Rajani, Deputy General Manager (Business Development), IGL, along with officials from Demeter Agro Energies and CEID Consultants and Engineering.
The plant is located in Village Balwanti, Kaithal, and uses feedstock including pressmud and spentwash. It also produces 50 TPD of fermented organic manure (FOM) for agricultural use.
Rajaram Prajapati, CTO and Founder of CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt Ltd, said, “With decades of experience in gas infrastructure and engineering, we understand the critical importance of compliance and technical integrity, especially for pipeline injection of CBG and its purity. After reviewing our gas generation and purification systems and P&IDs, the Managing Director and team from IGL acknowledged our strong commitment to safety and quality. Currently, with this plant, we are achieving 97.54 per cent purity, with our system designed to reach over 99 per cent , while maintaining oxygen content consistently below 0.2 per cent .”He said, “We have implemented comprehensive procedural and safety measures, covering pressure ratings, gas quality, volume control, and seamless integration with CGD networks. In line with these efforts, we are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of India’s first CBG-specific steel pipeline injection system. Our Kaithal plant will serve as a model facility for the industry, demonstrating best practices in design, safety standards, pressure management, pipeline connectivity, and more, setting a benchmark for scaling up CBG injection safely and efficiently across India.”
The CBG sector is supported by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission’s goals of promoting clean energy and waste-to-wealth initiatives.
