Energean FID Secures Croatia Gas Output

Energean Greenlights Irena Gas Field, Bolstering Adriatic Energy Landscape

Energean, a leading independent E&P company, has announced a crucial Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Irena natural gas field, situated offshore Croatia. This strategic move, undertaken in collaboration with partner INA – INDUSTRIJA NAFTE, marks a significant step in enhancing regional energy security and expanding Energean’s production footprint in the Adriatic. The project promises to unlock substantial gas reserves, feeding into a long-term supply agreement and reinforcing Croatia’s domestic energy capabilities.

Unlocking Croatian Gas Potential: The Irena Development

The Irena field development plan outlines a streamlined approach, featuring a single platform designed to tie back into the existing infrastructure of the nearby Izabela field. This efficient strategy leverages established assets, aiming for first gas production by the first half of 2027. The Izabela concession, where Irena is located, operates under Edina, a 50-50 joint venture between Energean and INA. Importantly, Energean maintains a substantial 70 percent working interest in this concession, underscoring its pivotal role in the project’s execution and future returns.

The financial commitment for this venture totals approximately $82 million (equivalent to EUR 71 million), with Energean’s net share of capital expenditure standing at about $57.8 million (EUR 50 million). This targeted investment demonstrates a clear path to monetizing the field’s resources. Geographically, the concession lies in relatively shallow waters, with depths around 147.6 feet (45 meters), facilitating development activities.

Reserves estimations indicate a robust P50 gross volume of approximately 30.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas. Once operational, the Irena field is projected to achieve peak production rates between 8 million and 10 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) gross, translating to a significant 1,400 to 1,700 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). This output is poised to contribute meaningfully to Energean’s overall production portfolio and to Croatia’s energy supply. A critical element of the project’s commercial viability is Energean’s existing long-term Gas Sales Agreement with INA, under which its net entitlement gas from Irena will be sold, ensuring a stable revenue stream from the outset.

Strategic Vision for Regional Energy Security

Industry leaders have voiced strong support for the Irena development, emphasizing its strategic importance for both corporate growth and national energy objectives. Francesco Federici, Energean’s Country Manager for Croatia, expressed enthusiasm for advancing natural resource development across Croatia and the broader Adriatic basin. He highlighted the investment as a strategic move, acknowledging INA’s collaborative partnership over the years and anticipating continued joint success.

Echoing this sentiment, Josip Bubnić, Operating Director of Exploration and Production at INA, underscored the investment’s role in advancing INA’s strategy to bolster domestic oil and gas production. He emphasized the project’s contribution to Croatia’s long-term energy security, affirming a clear vision to enhance supply resilience and maintain a leadership position within the region’s energy sector. These statements collectively paint a picture of a well-aligned partnership focused on sustainable energy development and regional stability.

Energean’s Robust Performance and Future Outlook

The Irena FID arrives as Energean reports strong operational performance for the first quarter ended March 31, providing a solid foundation for future growth initiatives. The company achieved a group production rate of 145,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) for the period, marking a commendable 2 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year. This consistent growth highlights Energean’s effective management and productive asset base.

Digging deeper into the production figures, output from Israel remained consistent year-on-year. While January and February saw higher sales volumes, a planned shutdown in March for essential preparatory work ahead of commissioning the second oil train temporarily offset these gains. This strategic maintenance ensures long-term operational efficiency and capacity expansion.

Excluding its Israeli operations, Energean’s group production demonstrated an impressive 9 percent year-on-year increase during the quarter. This significant uplift was primarily driven by robust volumes from the Cassiopea field in Italy, which successfully compensated for the natural decline observed in Egypt. Such diversified production streams illustrate Energean’s resilience and ability to manage portfolio dynamics effectively, offering investors a balanced risk profile.

Mathios Rigas, Energean’s CEO, articulated the company’s strong position as a diversified, gas-focused independent E&P player in the Mediterranean. He proudly noted the company’s substantial asset base, boasting over a billion barrels of oil equivalent with an impressive 2P reserves life extending to 19 years. This long reserves life provides significant visibility into future production and revenue, a key indicator for long-term investors. Rigas also indicated that Energean is actively evaluating potential mergers and acquisitions, signaling a proactive strategy for continued expansion and value creation in the dynamic energy market. The Irena gas field development stands as a testament to this forward-looking strategy, promising to contribute significantly to Energean’s sustained growth and reinforce the energy security of the Adriatic region.
