Digital Transformation: A Blueprint for Unlocking Legacy Data Assets

For over six decades, dedicated field researchers have meticulously chronicled the intricate lives of chimpanzees in East Africa. This profound undertaking, spearheaded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, has amassed an invaluable, yet historically analog, treasure trove of observational data.

The traditional methodology involved researchers meticulously penning notes every 15 minutes for individual chimpanzees, intensifying to every minute when observing mothers and infants. These handwritten records, often in multiple languages including English and Swahili, faced a formidable bottleneck: manual digitization. Lilian Pintea, Vice President of Conservation Science at the Jane Goodall Institute, highlighted the arduous nature of this process, noting that transcribing field data into web-based systems typically consumed up to two full days per batch. The sheer volume of this manual effort led to a significant accumulation, with the organization grappling with a multi-year data backlog since its inaugural digital database was established in 1997.

Recognizing the strategic imperative of modernizing their data infrastructure, the Institute initiated a pivotal move in 2025, deploying large language models (LLMs) to accelerate the digitization of over 500,000 pages of handwritten notes. This technological leap dramatically enhances the searchability and accessibility of scientific data for researchers at the nonprofit, founded by Goodall in 1977. The urgency of this digital transformation gained further momentum following the conservationist’s passing in October 2025, as preserving her unparalleled legacy through the digitization of her extensive notes became a paramount organizational priority, as articulated by Pintea. “AI represents merely the latest iteration in our continuous engagement with various technological cycles,” Pintea observed, underscoring a forward-thinking approach to innovation.

Strategic Technology Partnership and Platform Development

One of the most profound operational hurdles confronting the Jane Goodall Institute has been the fragmentation of vast, disparate datasets accumulated over five generations of chimpanzees. University researchers collaborating with the Institute often maintained their findings—comprising physical notes, photographs, and audio-visual files—within their respective institutional databases. This siloed approach hindered seamless collaboration and comprehensive data analysis.

In a strategic maneuver to consolidate these dispersed assets and foster enhanced collaboration, the Institute embarked on developing a new, unified data platform with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This ambitious initiative, dubbed the Gombe AI Research Platform, is designed to centralize and streamline access to this critical information. A dedicated team, comprising nine principal investigators, each supported by two to three Ph.D. students and approximately half a dozen undergraduate students, has been instrumental in converting these legacy assets into digital formats.

The genesis of this transformative partnership dates back to March 2025, when Jane Goodall delivered a keynote address at the AWS Imagine Conference in Washington. It was there that Pintea was first approached to explore a potential collaboration between the nonprofit and AWS’s formidable cloud computing platform. A kickoff meeting in April 2025 saw the Institute initially propose leveraging AI for identifying medicinal plant usage within video footage and classifying specific plants consumed by the apes. However, this particular use case was subsequently deemed too infrequent to justify dedicated development resources.

By June 2025, both AWS and the Jane Goodall Institute pivoted their focus toward a more broadly applicable and impactful AI application: photo and video record analysis. Taimur Rashid, Managing Director of the Generative AI Innovation Center at AWS, detailed how the organizations chose to enhance an existing video search tool, WISE, originally developed by the University of Oxford in January 2023. AWS ingeniously adapted WISE’s foundational framework to construct a robust, cloud-based tool incorporating visual search and advanced computer vision models. This innovation negates the need for researchers to expend countless hours manually screening video content, dramatically improving efficiency. “We possess the capability to digitize decades of analog data, render it searchable, and integrate generative AI components to meticulously analyze these data points, thereby achieving a profound understanding of these extensive historical records,” Rashid emphasized.

A crucial breakthrough occurred in August 2025 when an AWS team joined Pintea and field researchers in Gombe National Park. This on-site immersion provided invaluable insight into daily field operations, leading to the realization that the platform’s utility could be significantly expanded to include the digitization of handwritten records. This insight crystallized the platform’s multi-faceted potential. The Jane Goodall Institute and AWS subsequently defined five core capabilities for the AI platform: advanced multimedia search, precise video scene detection, accurate chimpanzee facial recognition, AI-powered behavioral analysis, and automated data processing and translation services.

The strategic implementation phase began in December 2025 with a kickoff meeting involving AWS, the Jane Goodall Institute, and AI tool and data platform builder Ode PB, formalizing the transition to the Gombe AI Research Platform. Throughout early 2026, the joint teams diligently worked to delineate platform requirements and optimize researcher workflows to maximize AI’s impactful integration. While certain researchers are already engaging with the Gombe AI Research Platform, its full operational launch is projected for the fourth quarter of 2026. Development efforts are ongoing, focusing on refining critical elements such as a specialized dictionary derived from 65 years of field notes and ensuring the platform’s ability to comprehend a specific Gombe dialect of Swahili.

Driving Efficiency and Unlocking Future Insights

The projected outcomes of this digital transformation are significant. Pintea anticipates that the AI-powered platform will finally enable the organization to resolve its long-standing six-year backlog of undigitized data. Beyond clearing this historical hurdle, the Gombe AI Research Platform is envisioned as a shared resource, accessible to field researchers, principal investigators, Ph.D. students, and undergraduates extending beyond the immediate confines of the Jane Goodall Institute. This expansion promises to foster a new era of collaborative research and broader scientific inquiry.

The immediate impact is already tangible in critical research areas. For instance, in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, two distinct groups of chimpanzees have engaged in only the second recorded “civil war” among the species. Pintea highlights how the Institute’s AI initiatives are providing real-time field data access, which is crucial for researchers studying this rare phenomenon, initially observed in Gombe. “Ultimately, this endeavor is about understanding our closest living relatives, which in turn offers a profound pathway to comprehend human evolution and, consequently, better define ourselves,” Pintea articulated, underscoring the deep scientific and philosophical implications of this technological investment.

This initiative exemplifies how strategic partnerships and advanced digital solutions can unlock tremendous value from legacy data, drive operational efficiencies, and propel scientific discovery into new frontiers, offering valuable lessons for any industry facing similar challenges in managing vast, complex datasets.
