Global trading and investment company Mitsui & Co. and Nike, announced the signing of a new virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) in Japan, to supply renewable energy certificates generated from domestic solar power plants.

According to the companies, the new agreements will enable Nike Japan to source 100% of its electricity needs across its distribution centers, stores, and offices from renewable energy, advancing the company’s decarbonization and clean energy sourcing goals.

Tetsuji Kobayashi, Vice President and General Manager, Nike Japan said:

“Partnering with Mitsui to cover our facilities with 100% renewable electricity reflects NIKE’s commitment to advancing responsive, resilient, responsible, and efficient operations.”

Under the new agreement, Mitsui & Co. Project Solutions (MPS) and Mitsui will provide non-FIT, non-fossil certificates generated by 16 domestic solar power plants in Japan, comprising 3 MW of new solar projects and 15 MW from recently established facilities, according to MPS.

Daiki Sato, General Manager of Carbon Solution Business Division at Mitsui said:

“We are honored to support Nike in its full transition to renewable energy for its operations in Japan. We will continue to provide comprehensive solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future for industry, society, and the broader environment.”
