SkyNRG Secures Funding to Build Netherlands’ First Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plant

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) provider SkyNRG announced that it has secured financing, including debt and equity capital, reaching final close on a project to build the Netherland’s first large-scale SAF production plant, with KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines positioned as the primary off-taker for the new facility.

Founded in 2009, Amsterdam-based SkyNRG aims to build up SAF capacity to help enable the aviation sector to meet its 2050 net zero commitment. The company was the first in the world to supply SAF on a commercial flight flown by co-founder and shareholder KLM in 2011.

SkyNRG focused initially on sourcing, blending and distributing SAF to airlines, and creating partnerships aimed at increasing the supply and production of SAF globally. Following a €175 million investment by Macquarie in 2023, and a subsequent €250 million investment from Dutch pension asset manager APG in 2025, the company shifted to become a major SAF producer through the development and operation of SAF production facilities.

The new production plant, based at the Delfzijl chemical park in the north of the Netherlands, is anticipated to produce 100,000 tonnes of SAF each year, as well as 35,000 tonnes of sustainable by-products such as biobased propane, butane, and naphtha, utilizing the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathway, which uses vegetable oils, waste oils, or fats as feedstock.

Construction on the new plant has already begun, with startup expected mid-2028. SkyNRG said that it anticipates the lifecycle GHG reduction of SAF to increase from an initial 80% to more than 90% over time, based on availability of Dutch renewable energy and reduced reliance on natural gas.

SkyNRG CEO & Co-Founder Maarten van Dijk said:

“It is crucial that we increase the global production of SAF to enable future generations to have the ability to fly when needed and SAF plays a vital role in the decarbonization of aviation.“
