International industrial services provider Bilfinger has secured a significant contract as part of a consortium to support bp’s latest green hydrogen project in Lingen, Germany. Under the agreement, Bilfinger will be responsible for the prefabrication, assembly, and installation of key plant components for bp’s new green hydrogen electrolyser facility. With a planned output capacity of 100 megawatts, the project is set to become bp’s largest green hydrogen production plant globally and the first to be entirely owned and operated by the energy major.

The new facility represents a major step in bp’s strategy to scale up low-carbon energy solutions across Europe. Once fully operational, the electrolyser plant is expected to produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2027. The hydrogen will be produced
using electricity sourced exclusively from renewable energy, ensuring minimal lifecycle emissions and supporting Germany’s broader climate and decarbonization objectives.

The green hydrogen generated at the Lingen site will serve multiple purposes. It will be supplied to industrial customers through a planned connection to Germany’s hydrogen core network, helping hard-to-abate sectors reduce their carbon footprint. In addition, the hydrogen will be used at the neighbouring bp refinery, where it will play a role in the production of lower-emission fuels, further supporting the transition to more sustainable refining processes.
