Philippines Makes Its First Gas Discovery in Over a Decade

The Philippines has announced its first major natural gas discovery in more than ten years, reinforcing the strategic importance of the Malampaya gas complex and offering a potential boost to the country’s long-term energy security.

The discovery offers some relief for a country that has long sought to expand LNG import capacity as domestic gas production from Malampaya declines. While the find does not eliminate the Philippines’ growing reliance on imported gas, it strengthens near-term supply security and underscores the importance of continued domestic exploration.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Monday that drilling at the Malampaya East-1 well, located around five kilometers east of the existing Malampaya field offshore Palawan, has confirmed a new gas-bearing reservoir estimated to contain roughly 98 billion cubic feet of gas in place.

According to the President, the discovery could translate into around 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to supply power to approximately 5.7 million households for a year. Initial well testing showed production rates of 60 million cubic feet per day, suggesting high productivity comparable to the original Malampaya wells.

“This indicates that the well has the potential to produce even more, confirming it is a high-productivity resource,” Marcos said, adding that the new reservoir will help extend Malampaya’s contribution to the country’s domestic gas supply for years to come.

In addition to natural gas, the MAE-1 well also encountered condensate, a high-value liquid hydrocarbon that can support efforts to stabilize power supply and reduce fuel import exposure.

The MAE-1 discovery marks the first milestone under the Malampaya Phase 4 Drilling Campaign, which also includes the Camago-2 and Bagong Pag-asa wells. The next phase of the program will involve completion and testing of the Camago-3 well, followed by drilling at the Pag-asa exploration prospect to assess further gas potential in the area.

The project is being carried out by the SC 38 Consortium, led by Prime Energy Resources Development B.V., in partnership with UC38, PNOC Exploration Corporation, and Prime Oil and Gas Inc. Marcos highlighted that the drilling campaign was led by Filipino engineers and completed without accidents or environmental incidents.

The Malampaya gas field has long been the backbone of the Philippines’ indigenous energy supply, providing fuel for power generation in Luzon and reducing reliance on imported LNG. With the original field in decline, the Malampaya East discovery comes at a critical time as the country seeks to balance energy security, affordability, and the transition to lower-carbon power sources.

The new find underscores the continued role of domestic natural gas in the Philippines’ energy mix, even as the government accelerates renewable energy development and LNG infrastructure expansion.
