Halliburton deploys matrix-body directional bit for longer Permian runs

Halliburton has introduced the Hypersteer MX directional drill bit, a matrix-body technology aimed at reducing well construction time in abrasive, high-flow environments. The bit merges shankless directional steerability with the durability of a matrix body to support longer drilling runs and fewer trips.

Directional bits have historically required steel shanks to achieve steerability, leaving critical components exposed to erosion during high circulation rates. Halliburton said the Hypersteer MX design removes the shank and relies on advanced matrix materials to withstand abrasion while maintaining responsive toolface control in vertical, curve and lateral sections.

Amr Hassan, Halliburton vice president for drill bits and services, said the objective is to address a persistent source of flat time. “Crews in the Permian and other shale basins are pumping more fluid and sand than ever, and conventional directional bits can degrade quickly under those conditions,” he said. “The matrix-body approach is intended to keep directional control predictable over longer intervals and help avoid premature trips.”

The technology forms part of a broader trend toward process efficiency rather than pure rate of penetration. Operators continue to design wells with tighter doglegs, higher flow and more aggressive laterals, requiring bits that can hold gauge and resist wear across multiple horizons. Halliburton said the new family of materials was validated through field testing at customer pads in the Midland basin before the commercial launch.

Hypersteer MX extends Halliburton’s directional portfolio as the industry seeks equipment that can deliver consistent performance in the most abrasive sections. Analysts said the development reflects a growing emphasis on minimizing trips, managing erosion risk and improving crew execution as primary levers for land-rig productivity in 2026.
