Creative Tech Textile Seawool® — Opening New Horizons for Sustainable Fashion

Creative Tech Textile has collaborated innovatively with Taiwan’s oyster farming industry to create Seawool®, a multifunctional composite material that blends oyster shells with recycled polyester, giving new life to discarded shells. The company has applied for multiple international patents and introduced this ocean-inspired yarn and fabric as a sustainable and high-performance solution for the global fashion industry.

With the assistance of the Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC), Creative Tech Textile has successfully transformed its research achievements into internationally competitive green textiles and eco-materials, showcasing Taiwan’s growing strength in sustainable material innovation.

Taiwan’s oyster farming industry generates an output value of approximately NT$4 billion (US$120 million) each year, but also produces an estimated 120,000 to 190,000 tons of discarded oyster shells. In the past, most of these shells were simply discarded, creating environmental challenges. In recent years, several companies have begun recycling these shells, converting them into high-value products for industrial, agricultural, food, and medical applications.

Founded in 2010, Creative Tech Textile has utilized its proprietary technology to integrate oyster shell powder into textile fibers, developing Seawool® — a material characterized by low thermal conductivity (providing excellent insulation and warmth compared to conventional polyester), antibacterial properties (effective against Staphylococcus aureus by more than 99.99%), and a soft wool-like texture. Combining innovation, sustainability, and functionality, Seawool® offers natural warmth and comfort, making it ideal for autumn and winter wear or air-conditioned indoor environments. The material has already gained traction in both domestic and international textile markets.

Adopting an eco-industrial approach, Creative Tech Textile has established a circular supply chain across Taiwan’s western coast — integrating oyster farming, shell collection, washing, drying, and primary processing — ensuring every step aligns with circular economy principles. The company further advanced the development of Hulk Bio-Ceramic, a nano-powder derived from oyster shells with high-value applications in cement coatings, 3C (consumer electronics) casings, and ceramic tiles.

Leveraging its unique production capabilities and product advantages, Creative Tech Textile continues to apply for global patents and scale production to meet increasing demand. The company remains committed to advancing sustainable fashion and delivering high-quality, environmentally responsible products to consumers.

Founder and Chairman, Mr. Wang, stated:

“Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of what they wear. We want people to know that sustainable innovation not only exists but is also scalable. The goal of Seawool® is to replace traditional fibers and promote true sustainability from the very beginning of the fashion supply chain.”

Looking ahead, Creative Tech Textile will continue to deepen its product development and expand into more international markets, ensuring that Taiwan’s textile innovation once again makes a significant mark on the global stage.
