SKF Launches Free Climate Solutions Patent Hub

Swedish engineering and manufacturing company SKF announce the launch of the Global Patent Bay, a new platform that allows innovative companies and individuals to share patents freely in an effort to accelerate sustainable technology development.

The company said that the launch of the new hub comes ahead of COP30 in Brazil, which is set to commence on 10 November.

According to SKF, the platform is designed to remove traditional barriers around intellectual property, such as licensing fees or complex agreements, in a bid to foster collaboration across industries and help the private sector contribute more directly to climate solutions.

SKF said Patent Bay could help industries meet ambitious UN and Net Zero targets faster by encouraging collaboration rather than competition. The effort also follows historical examples where open access to technology accelerated progress, from the three-point seatbelt patent to the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Global patent filings have hit record levels, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization, with 3.55 million patent applications filed worldwide in 2023, which is more than double the number in 1995.

To mark the platform’s debut, SKF is also releasing a patent for a high-performance bearing alloy originally developed for aviation. The material allows engines to handle higher loads more efficiently, with potential emissions reductions of up to 25%, which is almost equal to the annual output of one million cars.

Rickard Gustafsson, CEO of SKF, said:

“Innovation is essential for a sustainable future, and history shows that real breakthroughs happen when we share. The Patent Bay is our way of unlocking that potential – creating ripple effects across industries and society.”
