Mondi SCP to raise energy self-sufficiency at Ružomberok mill from 75% to 90% by 2027
€120 million investment backed by the EU’s Modernisation Fund
Project cuts NOx emissions by 50% and particulate matter by up to 83%
Mondi SCP is investing €120 million ($129 million) to build a new biomass power plant at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. Supported by the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, the project aims to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on natural gas, and improve local air quality.
The facility will replace the mill’s existing bark boiler and is set for completion in 2027. Once operational, it will lift the mill’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90%, enabling a more reliable and sustainable energy supply for both industrial operations and the local district heating system in Ružomberok.
Mondi said the new biomass plant will meet the strictest emission standards, cutting nitrogen oxide emissions by 50% and reducing particulate matter by up to 83% compared to the old system.

The plant will also use residual materials from pulp and paper production to generate renewable energy, reducing landfill waste and reliance on fossil fuels. All biomass will be sourced from certified forests managed under responsible forestry practices.
This project supports Mondi’s Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), which targets operational resilience, lower emissions, and increased sustainability performance. “The improved environmental performance of the new power plant will make an important contribution to the Group’s Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability commitments,” the company said.
