AWS Signs Renewable Energy Purchase Deal in India with Gentari

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Malaysian clean energy solutions provider Gentari announced that they have signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), supporting a new 80 MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India.

The new wind project is anticipated to begin operations in mid-2027, and to generate approximately 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually.

Amazon set a clean energy goal in 2019, pledging to match all of the electricity consumed across its global operations, including data centers, corporate buildings, stores and fulfillment centers, with 100% renewable energy by 2030. The company, which was the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally last year, announced in 2024 that it had reached its goal to power its global operations with 100% renewable energy, 7 years ahead of its initial target.

In 2023, AWS announced plans to invest more than $12 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030 to meet growing demand for cloud services across the country.

Jeff Johnson, Managing Director, ASEAN, AWS, said:

“As the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, AWS continues to work towards our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards that.”

Gentari was launched in 2022 by Malaysian integrated oil and gas company Petronas to target clean energy solutions across renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility. The company signed a collaboration agreement in 2023 with AWS to work together on a series of energy transition and technology initiatives, spanning areas from fleet decarbonization and low carbon fuel solutions to the expansion of the use of AWS cloud technology and digital upskilling.

Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, said:

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are not just adding renewable capacity – we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most. Together with AWS, we are focused on delivering impact through action and enabling the broader energy ecosystem to transition.”
