As part of its ongoing push for clean mobility, Aéroports de Lyon has launched a full-scale trial of a hydrogen-powered Toyota Hilux pickup, assessing its real-world suitability for airside operations such as infrastructure and wildlife surveillance. The test, conducted in collaboration with Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Toyota Motor Europe, and Toyota France, marks another step forward in the deployment of hydrogen solutions within airport environments.
The week-long test, which wrapped up shortly after it began on July 15, aims to generate practical feedback to help Toyota optimize the vehicle for airport-specific tasks. This includes evaluating durability, refueling logistics, and integration into existing operational workflows.
The trial follows the June 30 inauguration of a new Hympulsion hydrogen station near Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport, backed by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and designed to fuel both light-duty hydrogen vehicles and future airport fleets. Toyota’s hydrogen Hilux had already made a public appearance at the opening.
