Hitachi Energy Powers One of China’s Largest Green Hydrogen Projects with Transformer Technology

Strategic Infrastructure: Hitachi Energy’s rectifier transformers enable stable and efficient power supply for green hydrogen production via water electrolysis.

Decarbonization Catalyst: The project will produce 800,000 tons of green ammonia and methanol annually, replacing fossil fuels in industrial processes.

National Energy Priority: Backed by China’s energy strategy, the project is part of a broader push to scale up hydrogen as a core component of clean industry.

Hitachi Energy has supplied rectifier transformers to a major green hydrogen project in Songyuan, northeast China—one of the largest integrated hydrogen-ammonia-methanol developments in the world. Built by China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), the project aligns with China’s push to replace fossil fuels with hydrogen across industries and accelerate clean ammonia and methanol production.

Backed by a 3-gigawatt renewable energy facility powered by wind and solar, the initiative uses water electrolysis to generate green hydrogen. That hydrogen is then synthesized into ammonia and methanol, creating a clean energy value chain from source to fuel.

“In water electrolysis for hydrogen production, the rectifier transformer is a key device that enables stable power supply and improves production efficiency,” the company noted. Hitachi Energy’s transformer features a compact structure, low losses, high stability, and strong resistance to harmonics and current impacts—ensuring safe, cost-effective, and reliable hydrogen output.

“With our innovative transformer technology, we’re pleased to support our customers in building integrated projects of renewables, hydrogen, ammonia, and alcohol and jointly driving the growth of hydrogen-based clean energy and the process of the energy transition,” said Zhang Jianhua, Senior Vice President of China and Head of Greater China Hub, Business Unit Transformers at Hitachi Energy.

This project is part of China’s broader strategy to lead in hydrogen technology. The country is already the world’s largest hydrogen producer and has made hydrogen central to its national energy plan. In late 2024, China issued a roadmap to speed up industrial adoption of clean hydrogen, with clear goals for emissions reductions and sector upgrades.

Recognized as a low-carbon technology demonstration by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the Songyuan project is also a flagship initiative under Jilin Province’s “Hydrogen Powering Jilin” strategy. Once operational, it is expected to produce 800,000 tons of green synthetic ammonia and methanol annually.

With nearly 80 years of experience in rectifier transformer technology, Hitachi Energy continues to play a pivotal role in powering the global shift toward renewable industrial energy.
