Dozens of Chinese power companies have seen a presentation of Honduras’ rescue plan for its electricity industry as the government preps a 1.5 GW tender.
Honduras’ state-owned National Electric Energy Company (ENEE) has presented the terms of a planned tender for 1.5 GW of generation capacity to the government’s Electric Energy Regulatory Commission (CREE).
Honduran Energy Secretary Erick Tejada said, “Once the CREE issues its no-objection, we will be ready to officially launch the bidding process.”
ENEE has proposed using a reverse auction to procure 975 MW of renewable energy generation twinned with energy storage capacity, and 525 MW of non-renewables generation capacity.
Under the terms of the $1.5 billion tender, 800 MW of capacity would be due by early 2028, 300 MW by 2029, and the balance by 2030.
“With this, we would guarantee the energy supply for at least the next eight years,” said Tejada.

Chinese investors

A delegation led by Honduran Finance Minister Christian Duarte and Energy Minister Tejada has presented the government’s electricity sub-sector rescue plan to 60 Chinese energy companies.
The presentation included elements of the planned tender.
A statement issued by the Honduran government said the nation’s energy sector requires more than $4.6 billion of investment over the next ten years.
