Lyten assigns European management team

Following the announced acquisition of Northvolt’s assets in Europe, US battery developer Lyten has appointed several executives for Sweden and Poland. These are primarily Northvolt managers who are moving to Lyten.

The US company, which actually specialises in the development of lithium-sulphur cells, surprisingly announced the acquisition of the assets of Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt at the beginning of August. Last year, as the crisis at Northvolt became increasingly apparent, Lyten had already taken over the Californian battery production facilities of Northvolt’s subsidiary Cuberg, followed in July 2025 by Northvolt Dwa ESS in Gdańsk, Poland, a production, research and development facility for stationary battery energy storage systems.

The acquisition of assets announced in August concerns Northvolt Ett and Ett Expansion (Skellefteå, Sweden), Northvolt Labs (Västerås, Sweden) and Northvolt Drei (Heide, Germany). In addition, Lyten is acquiring all remaining intellectual property rights from Northvolt. It was announced at the time that several members of Northvolt’s management team were planning to move to Lyten.

“The new leadership team brings proven experience in industrial transformation and deep knowledge of Northvolt’s assets, operations, and people,” Lyten wrote in a press release. “These executives played a pivotal role in stabilizing operations and delivering to customers over the last year. They will transition to their roles with Lyten effective immediately.”

German managers play an important role

Matthias Arleth will become CEO of Lyten Sweden, based in Stockholm, and will report directly to Lyten CEO Dan Cook. Arleth has been president of the Cells business unit and COO at Northvolt since last summer, when the difficult situation in Sweden was already known, “where he was instrumental in the restructuring process in Sweden and successfully improving production performance in Skellefteå,” as his new employer attests to the German manager.

Another German manager will report to Arleth: Markus Dangelmaier will become CEO of the Swedish battery factory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå – essentially retaining his previous job, as the graduate engineer (BA) has been Senior Vice President of Operations at Northvolt and head of Northvolt Ett since January 2025. During this time, he was brought in to “help address scaling challenges,” according to Lyten.

Sami Haikala, CEO of Northvolt Labs based in Västerås, and Dennis van Schie, Chief Supply Chain Officer, will also report to Arleth. Haikala has been working for Northvolt Labs since 2022 on improving lithium-ion batteries – and will continue to do so in close coordination with Lyten’s teams in San Jose “to accelerate lithium-sulfur development.” Van Schie will work alongside Arleth in Stockholm.

Northvolt Dwa ESS’s business will be managed in future by Robert Chryc Gawrychowski as CEO of Lyten Poland. He has been with the former Northvolt unit in Gdańsk since its inception. Personnel details relating to the German Northvolt Drei project are not mentioned in the current announcement.

“We have the ingredients to be successful in Sweden, Poland, and Germany. Now it’s about executing,” says Lyten CEO Dan Cook. “This is a leadership team that knows how to execute. They each individually have a proven track record in industry and collectively drove a step change in manufacturing performance in Skelleftea over the last year.”

Arleth added: “I am honored to lead Lyten’s Swedish operations at such a pivotal moment. For our teams in Skellefteå, Västerås, and Stockholm, the message from Lyten is clear: Focus. We are focused on producing consistent, high-quality battery cells that meet our EV and Energy Storage customer needs right now. We are focused on ramping one line at a time in Skelleftea behind strong customer demand. At Vasteras, we are focused on delivering our next generation lithium-ion NMC cell and scaling Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries.”
