IKEA, truck manufacturer Daimler Truck Italia and logistics company LC3 Trasporti announced the launch of a new fully electrified heavy road transport project, aimed at reducing emissions from road transport in Italy and advancing a more sustainable logistics system.
Set to be phased in over time, the initiative will begin with two Battery Electric Vehicles, and expand to more than ten electric vehicles Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 by the third quarter of 2026, which will be used for daily container transport services to and from the ports of Genoa and La Spezia, as well as for daily store deliveries.
Maurizio Pompei, CEO of Daimler Truck Italia, said:
“The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 is the result of years of development aimed at radically transforming road freight transport. Seeing it enter service in a project of this scale, alongside two forward-thinking companies such as LC3 and IKEA, confirms that the energy transition is already happening. This is a virtuous example of how technological innovation can align seamlessly with environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.”
The initiative, slated to begin in October 2026, will reduce IKEA’s emissions and lower the environmental impact of its operational activities, the company said.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to enable more than 1.2 million kilometers of zero-emissions travel annually, completely eliminating CO₂ emissions and significantly reducing the climate impact of road freight operations, according to IKEA.
Ewelina Taylor, Global Transport Manager at Inter IKEA Group, said:
“This is an ambitious project aimed at significantly reducing our transportation climate footprint in Italy. Thanks to this new triangle partnership, we’re able to define the optimal setup together and deliver a solution that reduces total costs while also contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment, which is an essential part of our mission to create a better everyday life.”
Inter IKEA Group is the group of companies that connects IKEA franchisees with product range development and suppliers, and is responsible for aligning the overall IKEA strategic direction.
