Biorig to Invest Over €300M in Italian Biomethane Expansion by 2030

Over €300 million committed by 2030 to develop 20+ biomethane plants across Italy, targeting 1–1.25 TWh/year of renewable gas production.

Project capacity will supply energy for up to 450,000 households, supporting Italy’s decarbonization goals and circular economy model.

Strategic entry into the Italian market builds on Solarig’s 15-year renewable infrastructure track record and complements 20+ ongoing Spanish projects.

Biorig, the renewable gases division of Spain-based Solarig, is scaling up its biomethane operations in Italy with a strategic investment exceeding €300 million by 2030. The initiative will include the development and operation of more than 20 biomethane facilities, aiming for an annual production capacity between 1 TWh and 1.25 TWh—or 90 million cubic metres—equivalent to the annual consumption of 360,000 to 450,000 Italian households.

This expansion marks a significant diversification of Solarig’s energy portfolio in Italy, where it has already completed over 1 GW of solar projects during 15 years of local operations. With this move, Biorig plans to leverage its experience and infrastructure expertise to become a leading biomethane producer in Europe.

“Italy represents a strategic opportunity because of the solidity of its commitment to biomethane: a clear and flexible regulatory framework, a clear concern for organic waste management, and a well-defined vision of the agronomic advantages of biofertilisers,” said Manuel Alonso, Managing Director of Biorig.
“We are excited to be able to contribute to the development of this sector with a proven model adapted to the local context.”

Manuel Alonso, Managing Director of Biorig

The initiative aligns with Solarig’s new 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, which places a strong emphasis on technological diversification and sustainable fuel development.

“Biomethane is an essential pillar to advance in the decarbonisation of non-electrifiable sectors,” added Agnese Rocco, Country Manager of Solarig in Italy.
“This investment initiative is part of Solarig’s new Strategic Plan 2025–2028, which is committed to technological diversification as a response to the challenges of the energy transition.”

Biorig’s growth strategy in Italy involves both in-house project development and partnerships with local developers and operators aligned with national environmental goals. These collaborations will play a key role in ensuring that the facilities are designed for long-term viability and regulatory compliance.

“Our goal is to become one of the leading biomethane producers in Europe, and to make this activity one of Solarig’s strategic pillars in the coming years,” Alonso said.
“We have a solid track record as a developer of energy infrastructures, both internationally and in Italy, and we want to use all our experience to boost the growth of a sector that is already showing remarkable dynamism and maturity.”

Internationally, Biorig is already developing more than 20 projects in Spain with a combined production potential of approximately 3 TWh/year of clean energy. The addition of Italian assets reinforces its position as a key player in the European biomethane sector.

Solarig, headquartered in Madrid, currently operates more than 10 GW of photovoltaic plants and manages a portfolio of over 20 GW across 12 countries. Its team of more than 1,400 professionals drives its mission to support global decarbonisation through renewable energy, green gases, and sustainable fuels.

Through Biorig, Solarig embraces a circular economy model that utilises organic agricultural and livestock waste as feedstock for renewable gas production—simultaneously advancing local community development and the broader energy transition.
