Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) has made a significant strategic entry into the South American market, securing a landmark 10-year contract for marine services crucial to Argentina’s inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project. This deal not only marks APSEZ’s debut on the continent but also substantially broadens its global footprint in specialized marine logistics, signaling robust growth in its international service portfolio.
The highly sought-after contract was awarded to Adani Harbour International FZCO, a step-down subsidiary of APSEZ, operating through a consortium with the Argentina-based Meridian Group. This successful bid followed a rigorous global competitive tender process orchestrated by Southern Energy S.A. (SESA), highlighting the consortium’s expertise and competitive edge in the highly specialized domain of LNG infrastructure support.
Under the comprehensive agreement, the joint venture will deliver full-spectrum marine services essential for the Southern Energy FLNG project. This encompasses critical tugboat operations for the safe mooring and unmooring of large LNG carriers, robust offshore logistics and supply support to maintain operational continuity, and efficient crew transfer services. To ensure peak operational readiness and reliability, the project will deploy a dedicated fleet of vessels: four high-specification tugboats designed for demanding port maneuvers, one versatile anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel, and one crew boat for personnel transport.
This substantial undertaking is backed by an estimated investment commitment of approximately $70 million. The operational execution of this long-term contract will be spearheaded by Meridian Transportes Marítimos S.A., a strategic joint venture where Adani Harbour International FZCO holds a controlling 51% stake, with Meridian Group retaining the remaining 49%. This collaborative structure leverages local market knowledge with international operational prowess.
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer of APSEZ, underscored the significance of this project, emphasizing that it powerfully demonstrates the company’s escalating capability to support large-scale, complex energy infrastructure ventures across the globe. Gupta further highlighted APSEZ’s extensive experience, noting its current operation of marine services in 12 countries, and its deeply developed expertise in servicing a diverse client base, including major ports, sophisticated LNG terminals, critical refineries, national oil companies, and challenging offshore facilities. This track record positions APSEZ as a reliable and experienced partner for emerging energy hubs.
Argentina is rapidly establishing itself as a burgeoning force in the global LNG supply landscape. The nation has already forged significant agreements, including commitments to support exports of up to 10 million tonnes annually to India starting from 2027. The Southern Energy FLNG project is poised to become a pivotal conduit, effectively linking Argentina’s vast natural gas reserves with the expanding global energy markets, thereby enhancing the country’s role as a critical energy exporter.
The Southern Energy FLNG project itself is a strategic joint venture between two industry giants: Golar LNG, a pioneer in floating LNG technology, and Pan American Energy. The facility is strategically located within the San Matías Gulf in Argentina’s Río Negro Province. At its core, the project involves liquefying natural gas extracted from the General San Martin pipeline directly aboard the advanced floating LNG vessel, Hilli Episeyo. This innovative floating solution minimizes onshore infrastructure requirements and accelerates project timelines.
Commercial operations for this ground-breaking project are projected to commence in September 2027. During its initial phase, the facility is designed to produce an impressive 2.45 million tonnes of LNG annually, which translates to approximately 28 LNG cargoes shipped per year. This production capacity will solidify its status as Argentina’s very first operational LNG export project, opening a new chapter for the nation’s energy sector and providing a crucial new supply source for global energy consumers.
For investors, this contract reinforces APSEZ’s strategic diversification and strengthens its competitive standing in the global energy logistics sector. Beyond the commercial benefits for APSEZ, this collaboration serves to deepen the increasingly robust energy trade ties between India and Argentina, fostering economic cooperation and securing vital energy supplies. The venture exemplifies the evolving dynamics of international energy markets, where strategic partnerships and advanced logistics are paramount to unlocking new gas reserves and delivering them efficiently to the world.
