Energy NL has called on provincial party leaders to clarify their positions on key energy issues ahead of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2025 general election. The industry association, which represents companies across offshore oil and gas, hydro, wind, and clean fuels, sent a letter outlining questions that address opportunities and challenges facing the province’s evolving energy sector.

Energy NL’s requests focus on three critical areas:
Offshore oil and gas: Whether leaders will support the province’s offshore sector and oppose Canada’s federal emissions cap on oil and gas.
Bay du Nord and incentives: Whether governments will push for federal and provincial incentives to accelerate the sanctioning of Bay du Nord and offshore tiebacks, while maximizing benefits for local supply chains.
Renewable energy development: How leaders will address project concerns and establish a clear fiscal framework for onshore wind-to-clean fuels initiatives.
Charlene Johnson, CEO of Energy NL, emphasized that the province is at a pivotal point for energy development. “At this critical time, we need a provincial government that unabashedly supports all our energy resources, promotes our resources, and works to optimize the considerable benefits they provide,” Johnson said. She added that party responses will help members evaluate which candidates best support the province’s energy industry.
Energy NL highlighted Newfoundland and Labrador’s strategic role in supplying lower-carbon offshore oil and expanding renewable projects such as hydro and wind power. The organization urged party leaders to provide direct, detailed responses to ensure industry confidence in future provincial energy policy.
