Xing Mobility brings new immersion-cooled battery to the IAA

Xing Mobility is presenting its latest ‘Immersio’ series cell-to-pack battery system at IAA Mobility in Munich. The system is being used for the first time in Caterham’s fully electric lightweight sports coupé Project V, which will also be exhibited separately at the trade fair.

With its new battery system featuring a cell-to-pack (CTP) design, Xing Mobility aims to expand its position in the market for powerful high-performance batteries. The system is based not only on a module-free architecture, but also on direct immersion cooling. The background to this is that Xing Mobility is essentially a Taiwanese developer of immersion cooling technology for batteries.

In immersion cooling technology, the battery cells are completely surrounded by coolant. Cooling plates or channels that only touch one or two sides of a battery cell are otherwise common – heat transfer takes place over a significantly smaller area than with immersion cooling. This is intended to dissipate heat efficiently and prevent thermal runaway within individual cells and the spread of fire throughout the entire pack.

In July 2022, Xing launched its Immersio XM25 battery, which is specifically designed for heavy commercial vehicles. Two years ago, at the IAA, the company launched its first cell-to-pack battery solution (‘Immersio CTP’), which is also suitable for electric cars. At the Paris Motor Show last autumn, the Taiwanese company also presented a cell-to-chassis solution.

The Immersio series is a flexible package concept that, according to the manufacturer, can be adapted to the “specific requirements of different vehicle types such as sedans, SUVs, sports cars, commercial vehicles and more.” The latest CTP battery in the Immersio family, now announced for the IAA, is primarily designed for sports cars with high-performance requirements. In the Caterham Project V announced for the IAA, it has a capacity of 55 kWh, with the sports car coupé delivering up to 200 kW of output and accelerating from 0 to 100 kph in 4.5 seconds. The Xing battery in Project V can be charged from 20 to 80 per cent SOC in 15 minutes. The range of the vehicle, which weighs just under 1.2 tonnes, is stated as 400 kilometres.

According to Xing, the pack as installed in Project V is already being produced in Taiwan. At the trade fair, the manufacturer is also showcasing different form factors of its system to illustrate its scalability for a wide range of vehicle architectures. In addition to the Immersio system, Xing Mobility is also announcing the further development of its Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) concept.

Xing Mobility can be found at the IAA trade fair in Munich from 8 to 12 September in Hall A2, Stand B24.
