Paves way for first large-scale rollout of biochar-asphalt with verified carbon removal benefits
Targets significant reduction in Scope emissions for road construction sector
Signals a new commercial model aligning infrastructure performance with carbon accountability
Verde Resources Inc., through its subsidiary Verde Renewables Inc., has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions, Inc., advancing the commercialization of a low-carbon, biochar-infused asphalt solution in the U.S. market.
This agreement builds on a February 2025 collaboration that produced a cold-mix emulsion for biochar-asphalt surfaces—a project deployed at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT). The breakthrough formulation utilized Verde’s proprietary emulsifying agent, enabling low-temperature production with at least 20% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional binders.
In April, this technology generated the world’s first Carbon Removal Credits from asphalt production, a milestone driven by its integration of biochar—a material known for sequestering carbon—and a bonding system that delivers both durability and emissions reduction.

“When you think of the best and most respected name in asphalt, you think of Ergon,” said Eric Bava, Chief Operating Officer of Verde Resources. “This partnership is about more than innovation. It’s about equipping Ergon, along with its partners, contractors, customers, and broader ecosystem, with practical tools to reduce Scope emissions and further solidify their leadership in sustainable infrastructure.”
Under the new MOU, Verde and Ergon are working to finalize an exclusive commercial agreement for the U.S. market and accelerate technology validation at Paragon, Ergon’s state-of-the-art testing facility.
“We want to be on the leading edge of sustainable road materials, and the technologies Verde is bringing to the table make that possible,” said Larry Tomkins, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions. “This next phase is about accelerating adoption and delivering meaningful change in how roads are built—without sacrificing quality or reliability.”
The partnership positions both companies to lead in climate-aligned infrastructure, offering a model where commercial success and environmental performance are not mutually exclusive.
