The United States on Friday described India as a “tough negotiator” in trade discussions and said it expects New Delhi and other partners to honour agreements reached with Washington, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said at the India Today Conclave in New Delhi.

“India is a tough negotiator,” Gor said during the discussion.

He also stressed that the United States expects countries that enter into agreements with Washington to uphold the terms of those deals.

“Expect countries we have made deals with to honour those deals,” the U.S. ambassador to India told India Today.

Gor said the trade agreement between the two countries had been concluded relatively quickly compared with some of India’s other negotiations.

“India-US deal took 1 year to finalise in comparison with India-EU deal that took 19 years,” Gor said.

He described the agreement as mutually beneficial for both sides.

“The trade deal is a win-win trade deal,” Gor said.

The envoy also acknowledged India’s role in helping stabilise global energy markets amid geopolitical tensions.

“Appreciate India working with the US and global community to make sure oil prices remain stable around the globe,” Gor said.

Broader cooperation in defence, minerals and energy

Earlier at the conclave, Gor highlighted the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two countries, saying India and the United States were exploring cooperation in several advanced sectors.

“India, U.S. exploring opportunities in advanced engines, unmanned systems, expanded maintaince, repair ops in India,” he said.

He also noted that the two sides were nearing a key stage in negotiations over critical minerals cooperation.

“U.S., India moving to critical stage of finalising critical minerals agreement,” Gor said.

Touching on the energy sector, Gor said American companies were ready to support India’s plans to expand nuclear power capacity to meet rising electricity demand.

“India’s demand for electricity continues to expand as its economy grows, and meeting that demand will require a diverse and reliable energy mix. American companies across the civil nuclear supply chain are ready to support India’s plan to expand nuclear power capacity, helping provide the stable base load energy for the long term,” Gor said.

He also reiterated Washington’s broader strategic objectives in the Indo-Pacific, saying cooperation among regional partners remained a priority.

“One of our goals is to revive the QUAD,” Gor said, referring to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue grouping of the United States, India, Japan and Australia.
