TotalEnergies launches final phase for Iraq’s GGIP development

TotalEnergies, alongside Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, has launched construction of the final two major components of Iraq’s multibillion-dollar Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a landmark upstream and energy transition initiative.

The new contracts include the full field development of the Ratawi oil field, which will raise production to 210,000 bpd by 2028 with zero routine flaring, and the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP), designed to deliver 5 million barrels per day of treated seawater to southern Iraq’s oil fields. The seawater system will reduce reliance on freshwater resources from the Tigris and Euphrates while supporting pressure maintenance for major reservoirs.

These developments follow earlier GGIP milestones in 2025, including the start of a 300 MMcf/d gas treatment plant and a 1 GW solar facility. Together, the four integrated projects — oil, gas, solar, and water — represent Iraq’s largest upstream energy partnership, aimed at expanding production, reducing emissions, and bolstering electricity supply.

The Ratawi field redevelopment began in 2023, with Phase 1 targeting 120,000 bpd by early 2026. All associated gas from Ratawi — about 160 MMcf/d — will be captured and processed through the gas midstream project, supplying power plants with up to 1.5 GW of capacity, enough to serve 1.5 million Iraqi homes.

At peak construction, the GGIP will employ more than 7,000 Iraqi workers, strengthening the country’s upstream workforce and supporting long-term energy independence. TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné called the projects “a best-in-class example of our multi-energy transition strategy,” adding that the company has fully executed on its commitments in Iraq within two years of the agreement’s effective date.
