TGS accelerates Brazil exploration imaging with Pelotas Norte Phase I survey

(WO) – TGS has announced the start of its Pelotas Norte Phase I multi-client 3D seismic survey offshore southern Brazil, expanding coverage across one of the country’s most closely watched frontier basins ahead of future licensing opportunities. The project will map approximately 14,800 km² across 21 exploration blocks, most of which are in unheld acreage expected to appear in upcoming bid rounds.

A Ramform Titan–class vessel is scheduled to mobilize later in Q4, with acquisition extending into Q3 2026. The survey will utilize TGS GeoStreamer® technology to deliver high-resolution seismic data with industry funding support.

The Pelotas basin contains early-basin carbonates, passive-margin clastics, and multiple organic-rich intervals spanning the Albian, Turonian, and Paleocene, drawing operator interest due to its geological similarities with the conjugate margin and proven hydrocarbon systems of West Africa.

“Exploration activity in the Pelotas Norte basin is accelerating, with several major oil companies increasing their presence and commitment to the area,” said Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS. “This multi-client survey significantly expands our seismic coverage and will help clients better understand the basin’s structures and derisk future drilling.”

Following two large multi-client survey announcements in Brazil’s Equatorial Margin earlier in Q3, the Pelotas Norte Phase I program brings three Ramform Titan-class vessels working offshore Brazil through year-end and into 2026—reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s busiest offshore seismic markets.
