Tenaris successfully deploys corrosion-resistant tech in Brazil’s pre-salt

Tenaris has reached a new technical milestone in offshore Brazil with the successful deployment of corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) tubulars with its renowned Dopeless® technology in two wells located in the Búzios and Jubarte fields.

Both operations included the installation of more than 400 pipes per well, featuring Superduplex 25Cr steel grade tubulars with TenarisHydril Blue® connections and Dopeless technology, a multifunctional coating applied at the mill that reduces handling and preparation during storage and running. This enhances safety and efficiency in offshore environments while minimizing the environmental impact of operations.

CRA materials offer enhanced performance by mitigating corrosion risks and meeting the stringent technical requirements of the pre-salt. However, running CRA pipe usually presents a high risk of galling during make-up, which can result in slower running speeds and higher rejection rates. With its consistent, high-performance lubrication that significantly reduces galling occurrence while enhancing operational reliability, Dopeless technology has proven to be a perfect match for CRA materials. For instance, the use of Dopeless technology enabled running in stands of three in both wells, which also contributed to reducing installation times by 50%.

“Tenaris has pioneered the use of CRA materials in combination with Dopeless technology in some of the most complex operations worldwide. Since its introduction in the Barents Sea back in 2005, this combination has proven to enable safer, faster, and more reliable offshore operations. The recent deployments in the Pre-Salt reinforce our technical leadership in ultra-deepwater environments, where advanced materials and technologies are essential for long-term performance and reliability,” said Tomás Castiñeiras, Tenaris Technical Sales Global Director, who was part of the team that introduced Dopeless technology in Norway more than 20 years ago.

“We are bringing meaningful differentiation to the Brazilian market, building on a track record of successful applications in offshore operations worldwide. These projects mark an important step forward for Tenaris in the pre-salt, delivering an environmentally friendly, ready-to-run solution that requires no on-board waste disposal or cleaning, thereby reducing water consumption. Dopeless® technology also ensures more consistent performance, which is especially critical for CRA applications,” added Renato Catallini, Tenaris President in Brazil.
