SWISS Partners with Neustark on Multi-Year Carbon Removal Deal

SWISS becomes neustark’s first aviation partner for durable carbon removal

Partnership supports scale-up of CO2 mineralization in construction waste across Europe

Agreement strengthens SWISS’s broader climate strategy alongside SAF and other CDR solutions

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), part of the Lufthansa Group, has signed a multi-year agreement with Swiss climate tech start-up neustark to remove carbon dioxide by 2030, with an option to expand both scope and duration. The deal marks the first time an airline has partnered with neustark, underscoring aviation’s move toward permanent carbon removal solutions.

Neustark already operates 38 capture and storage plants in seven European countries and aims to scale its mineralization process to remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 in the coming years. The technology stores CO2 in demolished concrete and other mineral waste, locking it away for hundreds of thousands of years with minimal risk of reversal.

“We are proud to be working with neustark to drive forward an effective and durable climate solution based on Swiss innovation,” said Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS. “Permanent CO2 removal is a key building block on the path to net zero in aviation. Together, we are taking an important and early step toward scaling this technology.”

Valentin Gutknecht, founder and co-CEO of neustark, added: “SWISS is our first aviation partner – a hard-to-decarbonize sector. We applaud their multi-technology approach to enabling the scale-up of climate solutions. Pioneers like SWISS play a crucial role in further deploying our carbon removal technology to permanently remove exponentially more tonnes of hard-to-abate CO2 emissions from the atmosphere every single day.”

The collaboration is also significant for bridging two hard-to-abate sectors: aviation and construction. By injecting liquified CO2 captured from biogas plants into demolition granules, neustark enables permanent storage while creating recycled materials for roads and concrete. Verified by Gold Standard, the solution offers measurable, durable removals at scale.

Founded in 2019 as an ETH Zurich spin-off, neustark is expanding rapidly across Europe, with more than 20 additional projects in the pipeline. For SWISS, the partnership complements existing work with other Swiss innovators like Climeworks and Synhelion, reinforcing its commitment to multiple pathways toward net zero aviation.
