Svante Acquires Carbon Alpha To Expand Carbon Removal Projects In Canada

• Svante acquires Carbon Alpha, adding the North Star BECCS project designed to capture up to 140,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually in Saskatchewan.
• The project combines carbon capture, pipeline transport, and geological storage, expanding a regional hub for durable carbon dioxide removal credits.
• Partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council positions Indigenous communities as co-owners while advancing scalable carbon removal infrastructure.

Carbon management firm Svante Technologies Inc. has acquired Carbon Alpha Corporation, bringing a major bioenergy carbon capture and storage project and regional CO₂ storage infrastructure into its growing carbon removal portfolio.

The deal folds Carbon Alpha and its subsidiaries into Svante’s development arm, including ownership interests in North Star Carbon Solutions Corp. and North Star Carbon Solutions Limited Partnership. The transaction also adds the North Star Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project in Saskatchewan, developed in partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.

The acquisition strengthens Svante’s position as a fully integrated carbon management company capable of designing, building, and operating the entire carbon capture and storage value chain. That includes capture technologies, transport infrastructure, and permanent geological storage.

With Carbon Alpha’s assets, Svante now adds a regional pipeline network and a major geological CO₂ storage hub in Western Canada alongside its existing engineering solutions for industrial carbon capture and removal.

North Star Project Targets Large-Scale Carbon Removal

At the center of the acquisition is the North Star BECCS project, which will capture carbon dioxide from the Meadow Lake Tribal Council Bioenergy Centre, a biomass cogeneration facility that produces renewable electricity and heat using waste wood from a nearby sawmill.

Captured biogenic CO₂ will be permanently stored in a deep saline aquifer after transport through a dedicated pipeline connecting the facility to geological storage southwest of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.

Phase 1 of the project is designed to capture up to 140,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from the facility’s flue gas and other on-site emissions sources. The process will generate durable carbon dioxide removal credits through continuous measurement and monitoring of stored carbon.

The storage hub could later serve other biogenic emitters across the region, creating a broader carbon removal network tied to Western Canada’s forestry and bioenergy sectors.

Indigenous Partnership Central To Project Structure

The North Star facility is structured as a partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, which represents nine First Nations communities in Saskatchewan. Under the agreement, MLTC will co-own the BECCS facility alongside Svante.

Tribal Chief Jeremy Norman said the project strengthens both environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities for Indigenous communities.

“The Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) is excited to embark on the next stage of the North Star BECCS Project, in partnership with Svante and Carbon Alpha. North Star provides economic development, full-cycle carbon sustainability, and added value to MLTC’s existing green energy infrastructure and forestry-based operations. It enables the MLTC First Nations to create ongoing economic development, jobs, environmental leadership and optimism for our people,” said Tribal Chief Jeremy Norman of MLTC.

The partnership model prioritizes local job creation, skills training, and long-term economic participation for the participating First Nations.

Scaling Verifiable Carbon Removal Credits

For Svante, the acquisition also advances its ambition to scale engineered carbon dioxide removal markets as corporate buyers increasingly seek durable credits to meet net-zero commitments.

The North Star project will operate under rigorous monitoring, reporting, and verification frameworks aligned with the Puro.earth Geologically Stored Carbon methodology pathway, ensuring the resulting carbon removal credits meet emerging global standards for permanence and transparency.

Claude Letourneau, President and CEO of Svante, said the integration of Carbon Alpha’s expertise strengthens the company’s ability to deliver carbon removal at commercial scale.

“This project is a game changer for Svante and a pivotal moment for scaling verifiable, durable engineered carbon removal solutions working in tandem with nature,” said Claude Letourneau, President & CEO of Svante. “By integrating Carbon Alpha’s team, we’re accelerating the delivery of high integrity CDR credits at commercial scale in partnership with the MLTC leadership, who is closely coordinating with us on the North Star Project.”

Simon Bregazzi, former CEO of Carbon Alpha, said the combination accelerates the development of large-scale carbon removal infrastructure.

“Today marks an important milestone for Carbon Alpha as we join forces with Svante Development. Our mission has been to accelerate high-integrity carbon dioxide removal through the development of scalable, durable BECCS projects. Joining with a globally respected and well capitalized organization strengthens our ability to advance that mission with greater scale, certainty, and impact,” said Simon Bregazzi.

Next Steps Toward Final Investment Decision

The next phase of development will include a front-end engineering design study and a test well drilling campaign to confirm the geological storage reservoir. Project developers have already secured the lease for the storage site and obtained the necessary test well license.

A final investment decision is expected in the first quarter of 2027.

For executives and investors tracking the evolution of carbon removal markets, the deal highlights a growing shift toward integrated CCS platforms that combine capture technology, storage infrastructure, and verified credit generation. As demand rises for high-integrity carbon removal credits, projects linking industrial decarbonization with Indigenous partnerships and geological storage assets are becoming central to the next phase of global carbon management.
