Sora Invite Frenzy Is Leading Some People to Resell Their Codes

Sora, OpenAI’s new video app, can generate footage of you doing all sorts of things. One thing it can’t create, though, is enough invite codes to satisfy everyone desperate to get on the platform.

For now, OpenAI is limiting access to Sora, its TikTok-esque AI video and audio app. Each new user is also given four invite codes to share with their friends.

Less than a day after its launch, there are already indications that some users are abusing the system to try to snag a sought-after spot.

Business Insider found more than 20 completed sales on eBay already for Sora invite codes, ranging in price from $10.99 to just under $45.

According to eBay’s policy for digital items, “Software keys the seller is not authorized to sell” cannot be sold. A spokesperson for the online auction site did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s question of whether a Sora invite code would be included in this.

OpenAI has also posted a message on its official Sora 2 Discord, warning users against selling codes there, as this violates their server’s terms of service.

“Demand for Sora codes is high,” the message read. “Please keep in mind the server rules and be wary of direct messages that you may receive — selling codes via the server is prohibited.”

OpenAI’s terms of use state that users cannot “modify, copy, lease, sell or distribute any of our Services.” A spokesperson for OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Sora is powered by OpenAI’s new Sora 2 model, which the company says is “more physically accurate, realistic, and more controllable than prior systems.” Its initial launch is limited to the US and Canada. OpenAI also only released the app on Apple’s App Store, though they have promised that an Android counterpart is in the works.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Sora was the third top free app in Apple’s store, trailing only ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
