Schneider Electric and E.ON Sign Long-Term Agreement for Switchgear Deployment

Schneider Electric will supply a significant share of E.ON’s primary and secondary medium-voltage switchgear, ensuring early access to SF₆-free technology ahead of the EU 2026 F-Gas ban.

The agreement supports E.ON’s large-scale energy transition and standardization efforts, reinforcing grid efficiency and sustainability across Europe.

Schneider Electric’s industrial hubs in Germany and Hungary will power delivery of the AirSeT switchgear portfolio, strengthening the European supply chain for sustainable energy infrastructure.

Schneider Electric has signed a long-term framework agreement with E.ON, one of Europe’s largest energy companies, to accelerate the deployment of SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear across E.ON’s network. The deal marks a pivotal step in modernizing Europe’s energy infrastructure with sustainable and digital-ready technologies.

The agreement covers both primary and secondary switchgear systems, with Schneider Electric supplying GM-AirSeT primary switchgear and RM-AirSeT secondary switchgear panels (Ring Main Units) annually. The decision follows a successful pilot project at Westnetz, an E.ON subsidiary, using SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear.

“This agreement with E.ON is a powerful example of accelerating the shift to more sustainable, digital energy infrastructure. By working with E.ON to deploy SF₆-free technologies, we’re not only helping satisfy new regulatory requirements — we’re shaping the future of electricity in Europe,” said Melton Chang, Executive Vice President of Power Systems at Schneider Electric.

The partnership builds on more than 20 years of collaboration between the two companies and aligns closely with the EU F-Gas Regulation, which will ban the use of SF₆ in new medium-voltage switchgear up to 24 kV starting January 1, 2026.

“In order to actively shape the green transformation in Germany, we are investing massively in a future-proof energy infrastructure. This long-term contract secures access to SF6-free technologies, supports standardization and enables a cost-efficient implementation of the energy transition,” said Lisbeth Buschkühl, Chief Procurement Officer of E.ON SE.

SF₆ (sulfur hexafluoride), a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 24,300 times that of CO₂, remains in the atmosphere for approximately 1,000 years. Replacing it is critical to achieving climate targets and regulatory compliance.

Schneider Electric has invested heavily over the past 15 years in developing a broad portfolio of SF₆-free medium-voltage solutions. Its production centers in Regensburg, Germany and the Duna Smart Factory in Hungary are positioned to meet the increasing demand driven by regulatory shifts and sustainability commitments.

By standardizing key components across its German grid subsidiaries, E.ON is setting the foundation for widescale adoption of next-generation switchgear. These innovations will enhance grid efficiency, resilience, and support E.ON’s broader sustainability strategy.

Looking ahead, Schneider Electric will continue expanding its SF₆-free switchgear offerings to support various regional and application-specific needs, reinforcing its long-term commitment to low-carbon, future-ready energy infrastructure.
