Ram drops BEV plans, bets on range-extended 1500 REV

Ram will discontinue the development of a full-size all-electric pickup in North America as Stellantis responds to slowing demand for battery-electric trucks. Instead, the brand will focus on a range-extended model, now renamed Ram 1500 REV.

Stellantis confirmed that demand for full-size battery-electric trucks in North America has softened, leading to a strategic realignment. The planned full-size BEV pickup will no longer move forward. “As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup,” the company stated. Ram will instead concentrate on its range-extended solution, previously known as Ramcharger, which will now carry the name Ram 1500 REV.

The all-electric pickup had already faced prior delays. It was initially scheduled to hit the road in 2025, and in December last year, it was pushed back to 2026. And now, the BEV has been shelved altogether. Nevertheless, Ram positions the new Ram 1500 REV as its flagship electrified pickup. According to the manufacturer, the Ram 1500 REV “will set a new benchmark in the half-ton segment, offering exceptional range, towing capability and payload performance.”

The range-extended Ram 1500 Ramcharger (now the Ram 1500 REV) can go up to 690 miles on one charge. It comes with a 92 kWh battery pack and a 130 kW generator, offering an output of up to 250 kW in the front and 238 kW in the rear. Just as the battery-electric pickup would have, the range-extended variant supports bidirectional charging and can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Ram continues to highlight its electrified offerings as part of a broader product portfolio. And electrification remains a central element of Ram’s strategy in the commercial sector. The brand points to “considerable changes in process, execution and resources with a focus on commercial offerings, dedicated B2B-focused expertise, and sales and service support.” The ProMaster line, including the all-electric variant introduced in 2023, is part of this approach.

The manufacturer concludes that its strategy balances market demand with electrification goals, adding that the new Ram 1500 REV will “deliver the capability truck customers demand while supporting Stellantis’ electrification targets.”
