• Appointment aligns with Nuveen’s expanded Global Infrastructure Investment Platform.
• Papamantellos brings over 17 years of clean energy and investment leadership from RWE.
• Move reflects growing institutional momentum toward large-scale renewable infrastructure.

Nuveen Bolsters Clean Energy Leadership

Global investment manager Nuveen has appointed Costas Papamantellos as Head of Energy Transition Investments, reinforcing its growing presence in the clean infrastructure space. The announcement follows the firm’s recent consolidation of its infrastructure capabilities under a newly launched Global Infrastructure Investment Platform.

The platform integrates Nuveen’s clean energy, diversified and digital infrastructure equity teams, as well as its private credit and sustainable commercial real estate financing units, including Nuveen Green Capital. The move positions the firm to streamline investment strategies across renewable generation, storage, and energy efficiency financing — key areas of growth amid global decarbonization efforts.

Papamantellos, who joins from German energy major RWE, will be based in London and report to Joost Bergsma, Global Head of Clean Energy at Nuveen.

Deep Experience in Renewable Expansion

At RWE, Papamantellos spent more than 17 years shaping the company’s renewable and transition strategy, serving most recently as Managing Director and Head of Energy Transition Investments. He also led RWE Renewables Hellas, a joint venture developing 1.5 GW of solar PV projects across Greece.

His appointment brings extensive experience in structuring and financing renewable infrastructure assets across Europe — expertise that will be central to Nuveen’s next growth phase. The firm has been expanding its renewable portfolio through global wind, solar, and energy efficiency projects, targeting both developed and emerging markets.

“Costas’ background in developing large-scale renewable assets and managing transition portfolios brings both operational and strategic depth to our platform,” said Bergsma. “We’re expanding our global footprint to meet institutional demand for scalable, sustainable investment opportunities.”

Institutional Capital Shifts Toward Transition Assets

The hire reflects a broader shift among global asset managers to consolidate their energy transition strategies under unified platforms that combine equity, credit, and real asset expertise. For institutional investors, this approach provides integrated access to the full capital stack of clean energy financing — from early-stage renewables to large-scale grid and storage infrastructure.

Nuveen, which manages over $1.3 trillion in assets, has been steadily increasing allocations to energy transition sectors through both its infrastructure and impact investing divisions. The creation of a dedicated leadership role focused on transition investments signals an intent to deepen exposure to low-carbon growth assets as global energy systems evolve.

The firm’s Clean Energy Infrastructure business already holds interests across onshore wind, solar PV, and distributed generation, with a focus on long-term value creation for pension funds and institutional investors seeking sustainable yield.

Global Relevance and Competitive Landscape

Papamantellos’ appointment comes as the competition for experienced transition leaders intensifies across the finance sector. Asset managers, private equity funds, and sovereign investors are vying for expertise to navigate shifting policy frameworks, volatile power markets, and accelerating investor demand for credible net zero strategies.

With the EU and US both increasing infrastructure spending to accelerate decarbonization, demand for energy transition specialists with both operational and investment fluency is rising sharply. Papamantellos’ dual experience in project development and institutional investment is expected to help Nuveen bridge this divide.

Outlook for Nuveen’s Energy Transition Platform

By consolidating its infrastructure operations and appointing dedicated leadership, Nuveen is positioning itself among a new cohort of global asset managers adapting to the capital requirements of net zero. The firm’s integrated model — spanning clean generation, digital infrastructure, and sustainable real estate finance — allows it to align institutional capital more effectively with regional policy and market dynamics.

For investors, the appointment reinforces confidence in Nuveen’s capacity to deploy capital strategically across diverse transition pathways, from renewable buildout to enabling infrastructure. As global energy investment continues to pivot toward decarbonized assets, the firm’s growing leadership bench is expected to play a pivotal role in scaling that transition.
