Norway’s July vehicle registrations show 97 per cent EVs

9,291 electric cars were newly registered in Norway in July. They achieved a record market share of 97.2 per cent. The Tesla Model Y once again took first place in the model rankings in July.

Extremely high electric car market shares have long since become commonplace in Norway, with electric cars accounting for 94.1 per cent of new registrations in the period from January to July 2025. But in no other month have they been as high as in July: 9,291 electric cars out of a total of 9,563 new cars represent a new record of 97.2 per cent. In comparison, in July 2024, the figure was 91.9 per cent.

Of course, this also means that only 272 new registrations did not have a purely electric drive on board – officially, the 9,291 new registrations are ‘emission-free’ vehicles. However, as fuel cell cars do not play a role in Norway, these are practically all battery-electric cars. In addition to electric cars, there were 101 plug-in hybrids, 60 full hybrids, 86 new diesel cars and 25 pure petrol cars in July. Hybrids (PHEV and HEV) therefore accounted for 1.7 per cent of the market share, diesels for 0.9 per cent and petrol cars for 0.3 per cent of new registrations.

In the current year, the distribution looks quite similar, but hybrids are doing slightly better. In the first seven months of 2025, they accounted for 4.3 per cent (after 10.7 per cent in the same period of the previous year), with diesels at 1.3 per cent (2024: 2.7 per cent) and petrol cars at 0.4 per cent (2024: 1.0 per cent). At 94.1 per cent, all-electric cars have once again increased significantly compared to the previous year (85.6 per cent).

July is traditionally a rather quiet month in Norway, which is a pure import market. This year, however, new registrations were 48 per cent up on the previous year, mainly due to new electric car registrations. However, Øyvind Solberg Thorsen from the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) points out that many cars registered in July had been on order for some time but have only now been delivered. Overall, the Norwegian car market is experiencing a recovery and the effects of numerous discount campaigns by manufacturers.

New registrations in July are also noticeably more evenly distributed than in June. Back then, the Tesla Model Y dominated with a 25 per cent market share and over 5,000 new registrations. The Tesla built in Grünheide is also in the lead in July, but with only 715 new registrations or 7.5 per cent market share. It is followed by the Skoda Enyaq (574), the VW ID.4 (408) and the BYD Sealion 7 (380). As the Ford Explorer made it into the top ten for the first time, half of the models, together with the VW ID.3 and ID.7 models, are based on the MEB.
