Tesla may turn the Cybertruck into a fully autonomous delivery vehicle, shifting the electric pickup away from everyday drivers and toward cargo fleets.

On its latest earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said the company plans to transition the Cybertruck production line into a fully autonomous one focused on delivery work.
“We will transition the Cybertruck line to just a fully autonomous line, and there’s obviously a market there for cargo delivery,” Musk said. “An autonomous Cybertruck could be useful for that.”
That marks a major change from how the Cybertruck was first introduced. The vehicle was pitched as a rugged electric pickup built for consumers. Now Tesla appears to be looking at it as a driverless cargo hauler that could move goods around cities without a person behind the wheel.
Musk did not outline timing or provide details about how the shift would roll out. But the comment signals that Tesla sees more long-term value in autonomy and fleet use than in competing head-to-head in the consumer pickup market.
For supply chain leaders, the idea raises bigger questions. If Tesla turns the Cybertruck into a self-driving delivery vehicle, it could enter a space already crowded with electric vans and last-mile vehicles. The difference would be full autonomy, which could remove labor costs and change how companies plan local delivery routes.
“There’s a lot of cargo that needs to move locally within a city, and an autonomous Cybertruck could be very useful for that,” Musk added.
