In this interview, Michael Sheldrick, co-founder of Global Citizen and author of the new book “From Ideas to Impact,” sat down with ESG News CEO & Editor-in-Chief Matt Bird to give us an exclusive look into the making of his book, inspired by policy change. Michael Sheldrick unpacks how his experiences mobilizing 12.5 million global citizens to tackle climate change and extreme poverty inspired a practical guide for everyday changemakers.

Sheldrick demystified “policy change,” often seen as distant and abstract, emphasizing that systemic impact starts close to home. Whether you’re an ordinary citizen, a small business owner, or a cultural powerhouse like Taylor Swift, the book offers an accessible 8-point playbook distilled from conversations with world leaders. It’s not a one-size-fits-all manifesto with all the answers, but a launchpad for action in your community, workplace, nation—or even worldwide.

At its core, From Idea to Impact confronts today’s “crisis of apathy,” where many doubt their efforts matter. Drawing on data that shows a single first step sparks momentum and inspires others, Michael Sheldrick urges readers to overcome inertia. As he put it, echoing Eleanor Roosevelt: “The way to begin is to begin.” This slim, empowering read is the perfect spark for anyone ready to turn ideas into real-world ripples.

About Michael Sheldrick: Policy Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Global Citizen

Michael Sheldrick (born 1988) is an Australian policy entrepreneur, author, and global advocate dedicated to combating extreme poverty, advancing global health, and tackling climate change. As Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact, and Government Affairs Officer at Global Citizen, he drives high-impact campaigns that mobilize governments, businesses, celebrities, and citizens to deliver over $40 billion in commitments for sustainable development since 2008.

Early Life and Education

Born in Perth, Australia, Sheldrick faced academic challenges early on, including enrollment in special education classes where a teacher once doubted his path to university. Undeterred, he channeled his energy into activism, earning degrees in law and political science from the University of Western Australia. His tenacity earned him accolades like 2013 Young Western Australian of the Year and a spot on The Sunday Times‘ list of WA’s 50 Best and Brightest. In 2017, he was a finalist for Young Commonwealth Person of the Year.

Career and Impact at Global Citizen

While still a student, Sheldrick co-founded Global Poverty Project (now Global Citizen) in 2008 with Hugh Evans and Simon Moss, transforming it into a powerhouse movement with millions of supporters worldwide. In his leadership role, he has orchestrated global campaigns on issues like polio eradication, girls’ education, and climate resilience. Notable efforts include:

Partnering with Rihanna in Senegal (2015) to secure $2.3 billion for education in developing countries.

Advocating with Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat for international polio action.

Leading the 2019 Global Goal Live: Nigeria Policy Forum to align private philanthropy with SDGs.

Sheldrick bridges pop culture and policy, collaborating with artists like Beyoncé, Coldplay, Rihanna, and Usher, and leaders including Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. His work has been featured in The New Yorker, BBC, and National Geographic’s Activate series (2019).

Authorship and Thought Leadership

In April 2024, Sheldrick published From Ideas to Impact: A Playbook for Influencing and Implementing Change in a Divided World (Wiley), a best-seller offering a roadmap for aspiring changemakers to turn ideas into policy wins. The book draws from his experiences launching campaigns that engage marginalized communities and global institutions. He also runs the Substack newsletter Mick’s Policy, History & World Chronicles, with thousands of subscribers exploring policy solutions, history, and geopolitical impacts.

A sought-after speaker, Sheldrick captivates audiences at events like MIT’s conversations on impact (2024) and international summits on sustainable development. His writing appears in The Guardian, Huffington Post, and The Diplomat.

Board Roles and Recognition

Sheldrick serves on the board of the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, advancing gender equality and sustainable development. Peers praise his ability to unite diverse stakeholders: “Michael is a visionary changemaker whose ability to unite voices… is nothing short of inspiring.”

Now based in the United States, Sheldrick continues to inspire action, proving that policy entrepreneurship can bridge divides for a more equitable world. For more, check his book or Global Citizen’s campaigns at .
