Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp owner Meta and Alberta-based energy company Enbridge announced a new long-term contract with Enbridge supplying Meta with 100% of the renewable energy generated from a new 600 MW solar facility in Texas to power the tech company’s data center operations.
The new project, Clear Fork, will be a utility scale solar facility located near San Antonio. Enbridge announced that it has reached a final investment decision on the project, with an estimated project cost of approximately $900 million.
The facility is currently under construction, and is anticipated to enter into service during the summer of 2027.
Matthew Akman, Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy, & President, Power, at Enbridge, said:
“Clear Fork demonstrates the growing demand for renewable power across North America from blue-chip companies who are involved in technology and data center operations.”
Meta has set a target to reach net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030. The company achieved its goal to meet 100% of its operational energy needs with renewable sources in 2020, and recently said that it anticipates adding 9.8 GW of renewable energy to local grids in the U.S. by the end of 2025.
The announcement marks the latest in a series of large-scale renewable energy purchases by Meta, including several recent Texas-based clean energy deals.
Urvi Parekh, Head of Global Energy at Meta, said:
“We are thrilled to partner with Enbridge to bring new renewable energy to Texas and help support our operations with 100% clean energy.”
