New Geothermal Power for AI and Data Centers: The project will provide 150 MW of clean, water-independent baseload power to support Meta’s expanding data infrastructure.
10x Increase in State Geothermal Output: The partnership will multiply New Mexico’s current geothermal capacity tenfold, tapping into high-potential hot rock resources.
Scalable, Water-Free Energy Tech: XGS’s proprietary technology decouples geothermal production from traditional geographic and water limitations, expanding feasibility across dry rock regions.
Meta Platforms and XGS Energy have entered into a landmark agreement to develop 150 megawatts of next-generation geothermal power in New Mexico, marking a major step in clean energy innovation and data infrastructure resilience.
XGS will deploy its proprietary water-independent geothermal technology to supply power directly to the PNM electric grid, supporting Meta’s fast-growing AI and data center operations in the region.
“We’re pleased to support Meta’s ambitious AI objectives and accelerate access to new round-the-clock power supplies,” said Josh Prueher, CEO of XGS Energy. “We are eager to feed clean, water-independent geothermal power into the New Mexico market at a scale uniquely possible with XGS technology.”
Unlike conventional geothermal systems, XGS’s solution does not rely on surface water or permeable rock, unlocking geographic flexibility for power generation. Though New Mexico currently operates only one geothermal plant, it sits atop some of the nation’s richest hot rock resources. This project alone will increase the state’s geothermal electricity generation by a factor of ten.

“With next-generation geothermal technologies like XGS ready for scale, geothermal can be a major player in supporting the advancement of technologies like AI,” said Urvi Parekh, Global Head of Energy at Meta. “We’re excited to partner with XGS to unlock a new category of energy supply for our operations in New Mexico.”

The two-phased project will be completed by 2030, creating good-paying jobs and reinforcing the state’s leadership in renewable energy.
“XGS Energy and Meta’s 150 MW project will strengthen our grid with reliable baseload power and position our state as a national leader in next-generation renewable energy,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “Geothermal energy represents a promising new frontier.”

A new report, The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico, highlights more than 160 GW of untapped geothermal potential—placing the state at the center of geothermal innovation.
“We’re proud to support this innovative, carbon-free project from Meta and XGS Energy,” said Don Tarry, President and CEO of PNM. “This project is a meaningful step toward meeting New Mexico’s clean energy goals.”
For Meta, one of the world’s largest corporate buyers of clean energy, this deal reinforces its commitment to powering global operations with reliable, carbon-free energy.
