Global Benchmarking Tool: EcoBeautyScore is the first industry-wide, science-based environmental scoring system for cosmetics, developed by a 70+ member consortium.
Consumer Trust & Transparency: Backed by third-party audits, the A-to-E rating system is already influencing purchasing behavior across Europe, China, the U.S., and Brazil.
Scalable Sustainability Framework: Aligned with EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) standards, the tool identifies environmental “hotspots” and supports sustainable product design.
EcoBeautyScore, the new global environmental rating system for cosmetics and personal care products, has officially launched across select European markets. Backed by major industry players including L’Oréal Paris, Neutrogena, Nivea Q10, and Eucerin, the platform provides consumers with science-based, lifecycle assessments of a product’s environmental footprint using a clear A-to-E score.
Developed over three years by the EcoBeautyScore Association, a not-for-profit consortium of over 70 global manufacturers and trade associations, the methodology adheres to the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and assesses 16 environmental impact categories—from carbon emissions and water usage to land use and resource depletion.
“EcoBeautyScore is an industry-first initiative to bring harmonized, science-based transparency to the beauty sector,” the association said in a joint statement.
Products across four initial categories—shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and face care—are now live on the platform. Each score is subject to independent third-party audits, and the system is expected to expand globally to include the full spectrum of cosmetic and personal care products. Participating companies can access free onboarding and trial support to begin integration.
The initiative responds to rising consumer demand for environmental accountability in the beauty industry. According to research cited by the association, over two-thirds of consumers in China, the U.S., France, and Brazil say the EcoBeautyScore label builds trust, with most indicating it will influence their future purchases.

“Consumers want transparency, and EcoBeautyScore bridges the gap between marketing claims and scientific reality,” the association added.
Beyond its value to consumers, the tool offers manufacturers data-driven insights into environmental ‘hotspots’, enabling them to redesign products more sustainably and meet increasing regulatory and investor scrutiny.
With Europe’s beauty market projected to exceed $150 billion by 2025, EcoBeautyScore is poised to set a new standard for sustainability disclosure, consumer trust, and industry-wide accountability.
