Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday claimed it has taken full control of the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass.
In a statement carried by Fars news agency, Guards Navy official Mohammad Akbarzadeh said, “Currently, the Strait of Hormuz is under the complete control of the Islamic Republic’s Navy.” He warned that any vessel attempting to transit the passage could face risks, including potential damage from missiles or stray drones.
The remarks come at a time of heightened regional tensions and growing concerns over the safety of maritime traffic in the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf to the Arabian Sea and is considered one of the most critical chokepoints in global energy trade. Any disruption there can have immediate repercussions for oil prices and international shipping.
The claim also follows comments from US President Donald Trump a day earlier. On Tuesday, Trump said the US Navy stood ready to escort oil tankers through the vital corridor, signaling Washington’s intention to ensure freedom of navigation amid escalating hostilities.
