India’s Petrol Consumption Surges 5% in August 2025, Diesel Demand Stable, ETEnergyworld

New Delhi: India’s petrol consumption rose 5.05 per cent year-on-year to 3.53 million tonnes in August 2025, while diesel demand remained steady at 6.56 million tonnes, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed on Friday.

According to the flash report, petrol sales increased from 3.36 million tonnes in August last year. Diesel consumption, which accounts for the largest share in India’s fuel basket, recorded a marginal rise from 6.50 million tonnes in the same month of 2024.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) demand grew 4.18 per cent to 2.89 million tonnes in August, up from 2.78 million tonnes in the corresponding period of last year. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) consumption, however, slipped 3.57 per cent to 0.71 million tonnes compared with 0.73 million tonnes in August 2024.

During April–August of the current fiscal, cumulative petrol consumption stood at 17.78 million tonnes, up 6.44 per cent from 16.71 million tonnes in the same period a year ago. Diesel sales in the first five months of FY26 rose 2.27 per cent to 38.88 million tonnes, compared with 38.01 million tonnes last year.

LPG consumption in the April–August period was 13.82 million tonnes, an increase of 7.73 per cent from 12.83 million tonnes a year earlier. ATF consumption during the same period rose 1.14 per cent to 3.69 million tonnes from 3.65 million tonnes.>
