New Delhi: India’s total natural gas consumption declined by 9.6 per cent year-on-year to 11,361 MMSCM in April–May 2025, while LNG imports for May 2025 fell 15.3 per cent to 2,977 MMSCM compared to the same month last year, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

Gross production of natural gas in May 2025 stood at 2,979 MMSCM, which is 4 per cent lower than the same period last year. The net production of domestic natural gas available for sale was 2,501 MMSCM, down 3.2 per cent from May 2024.

The total natural gas available for sale in May 2025 was 5,478 MMSCM, registering a 10.2 per cent decline over the corresponding month in the previous year. Major consuming sectors were fertilizers (25.6 per cent), city gas distribution (22.8 per cent), power (13.8 per cent), refineries (7.9 per cent), and petrochemicals (6.5 per cent).

Natural gas consumption for the fertilizer sector decreased by 13.2 per cent to 1,498 MMSCM in May 2025. Consumption in the power sector dropped sharply by 36.1 per cent to 805 MMSCM. However, city gas distribution consumption increased by 4.3 per cent to 1,336 MMSCM. Petrochemicals and refinery sectors consumed 379 MMSCM and 464 MMSCM, respectively.

Among states, Gujarat accounted for the highest gas consumption at 47.07 MMSCMD, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 30.78 MMSCMD and Maharashtra at 26.45 MMSCMD. Delhi’s consumption stood at 7.41 MMSCMD, while Rajasthan consumed 10.02 MMSCMD.

PPAC data shows that the net domestic production for sale represents 83.9 per cent of the gross production, after accounting for internal consumption and flaring losses. The report also highlighted that the total availability of natural gas for consumption, including LNG and domestic production, was 5,918 MMSCM in May 2025.

Natural gas imports continue to form a significant portion of India’s gas supply mix, although the month saw a steep decline in LNG imports. For April–May 2025, cumulative LNG imports were also lower by 1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
