India’s natural gas supply saw a substantial decrease in October 2025. Both domestic production and liquefied natural gas imports fell.

New Delhi: India’s gross natural gas production fell 5.1 per cent year-on-year to 2,954 million metric standard cubic metres (MMSCM) in October 2025, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports declined 21.6 per cent to 2,844 MMSCM, leading to a 14.6 per cent drop in gas available for sale, data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed.

According to PPAC’s Monthly Report on Natural Gas Production, Availability and Consumption for October 2025, domestic gas production was lower compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, while LNG imports also recorded a sharp decline. As a result, natural gas available for sale during the month stood at 5,302 MMSCM, compared with 6,212 MMSCM in October 2024. Total gas consumption availability during the month was reported at 5,759 MMSCM.

The data showed that fertiliser units remained the largest consumers of natural gas in October, accounting for about 30 per cent of total consumption. City Gas Distribution (CGD) followed with a 23 per cent share, while the power sector consumed around 9 per cent. Refineries accounted for 8 per cent of gas consumption, and petrochemicals used about 6 per cent, according to the sector-wise break-up provided by PPAC.

PPAC noted that net domestic gas production available for sale was around 84 per cent of gross production during the month, after accounting for internal consumption, flaring and technical losses by gas-producing companies. Of the total domestic output, ONGC remained the largest producer, followed by Oil India Ltd and private and joint venture operators.

The report also highlighted that total LNG imports during October were lower compared to the same period last year, contributing to the overall reduction in gas availability. Domestic net gas production for sale declined marginally, while the sharper fall in LNG imports weighed on total supply.

On the consumption side, PPAC data showed mixed trends across sectors on a cumulative basis for the current financial year so far. While CGD and petrochemicals recorded growth, gas consumption in fertilisers, power and refineries declined compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

State-wise data indicated that Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra were among the largest consumers of natural gas in October, reflecting demand from fertilisers, CGD networks, power plants and industrial users.
