Global crude benchmarks experienced a significant upward thrust on Thursday, as persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, coupled with conflicting signals surrounding potential U.S.-Iran negotiations, continued to inject profound uncertainty into energy markets. Investors reacted swiftly to the complex tapestry of diplomatic rhetoric and escalating military posturing.

International benchmark Brent crude futures posted a robust gain of 5.7%, closing the trading session firmly above the $108 per barrel threshold. Concurrently, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the key indicator for U.S. crude, advanced by a notable 4.6%. This broad market surge underscored heightened anxiety across the commodities sector regarding future oil supply stability.

The perilous situation within the Strait of Hormuz, an indispensable maritime chokepoint for global oil and natural gas shipments, remains a critical concern. Its near-total closure continues to severely impede daily crude flows, resulting in a substantial loss of millions of barrels of output. This profound disruption has cascaded through the supply chain, dramatically driving up prices for refined petroleum products, from diesel fuel to vital aviation jet fuel.

Crude valuations have demonstrated extreme sensitivity to breaking news regarding the trajectory of the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, and Thursday proved no exception. Prices climbed following a U.S. advisory warning commercial vessels of potential threats from Iran-backed Houthi militants operating in the Bab El Mandeb Strait. This development significantly amplified existing fears concerning the integrity of global supply chains, given that the Bab El Mandeb route serves as one of the few viable alternative shipping lanes to the constricted Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. President Donald Trump, addressing the escalating crisis, intensified pressure on Tehran by reiterating threats of further military action should a diplomatic resolution fail to materialize. His equivocation regarding a potential extension of a five-day deadline for negotiations kept market participants on tenterhooks. Domestically, facing a surge in energy costs impacting consumers at the pump, the White House has actively deployed a combination of policy signals and rhetoric in an attempt to temper rising prices. Among the considerations floated by President Trump was the possibility of temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax.

“The market has clearly moved beyond diplomatic overtures and is now demanding concrete specifics on negotiation progress, alongside a definitive pathway to ensure the full, unhindered reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” observed Rebecca Babin, a senior energy trader at CIBC Private Wealth Group. She elaborated, “Previous efforts to talk crude prices lower – whether through providing wiggle room on Friday’s deadline or suggesting policy ideas like a gas tax holiday – have worked in the past, but proved ineffective in today’s environment.”

In a stark illustration of the potential severity of the crisis, administration officials in the United States are reportedly undertaking detailed analyses of the profound economic repercussions should crude oil prices surge to an alarming $200 per barrel. This assessment signals a serious recognition at the highest levels of government concerning the potential fallout from such extreme market scenarios.

On the Iranian side, the semi-official Fars news agency reported that Tehran is actively formulating draft legislation to impose a security fee on vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz chokepoint. Earlier in the day, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency indicated that Iran had communicated a response to the U.S.’s 15-point peace proposal through intermediary channels. This communication followed an earlier warning from President Trump for Iran to engage seriously in talks “before it is too late.” Tasnim further conveyed Iran’s call for a comprehensive cessation of hostilities on all fronts, a statement widely interpreted as a reference to Israel’s concurrent military actions against the Tehran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

The conflict’s genesis in late February has been a catalyst for unprecedented market volatility, triggering four of the six largest single-day price swings ever recorded in international Brent crude futures. A concerning trend of diminishing market liquidity is rapidly emerging, raising fears that these violent price movements could intensify further, posing significant challenges for investors striving to manage their exposure and protect their portfolios in such an unpredictable landscape.

“For nearly four weeks, energy markets demonstrated a remarkable degree of resilience in the face of persistent disruption,” stated Paola Rodriguez-Masiu, Chief Oil Analyst at Rystad Energy. She cautioned, “However, with global spare production capacity now largely inaccessible due to the Strait’s constraints, and existing inventories already drawing down, the entire system has fundamentally shifted from a state of buffering capacity to one of extreme fragility.”

While official announcements remain pending, sources familiar with military planning indicate that the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of two Marine Expeditionary Units – a force comprising approximately 5,000 personnel, along with supporting aircraft and landing vehicles – to the strategic region. Furthermore, reports emerged on Tuesday suggesting that President Trump is also directing the dispatch of elements from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division, underscoring a significant and growing military presence in the area.

Oil Price Settlements

For specific contract details, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for May delivery concluded the session up 4.6%, settling at $94.48 per barrel.

Similarly, Brent crude futures for May settlement advanced 5.7%, closing at $108.01 a barrel.

Sultan Al Jaber, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and a prominent voice from the United Arab Emirates’ state-run oil sector, delivered a strong condemnation of Iran’s actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing an event in Washington, he asserted, “The weaponization of the Strait of Hormuz is not merely an act of aggression against a single nation; it constitutes economic terrorism against every nation, impacting every family globally.”

As the protracted conflict persists, evidenced by fresh Israeli strikes against the Iranian city of Isfahan and subsequent retaliatory actions from Tehran, governments across Asia are actively preparing for a range of potential worst-case scenarios. This regional apprehension is already manifesting in economic impacts: Thailand observed a substantial 22% increase in gasoline prices, while the Philippines moved to suspend its wholesale electricity spot market. Farmers in both India and China are grappling with a sharp surge in agrochemical expenses, illustrating the broad and significant economic ripple effects reverberating across the Asian continent.
