State-run gas utility GAIL (India) Limited on Thursday said LNG supplies under its long-term contract with Petronet LNG Limited have been reduced to zero with effect from March 4 after the supplier declared force majeure, citing navigation restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and possible disruption at Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility.
QatarEnergy, Petronet LNG Limited (PLL)’s upstream LNG supplier, has also issued a communication indicating a potential Force Majeure event owing to the recent hostilities in the region.
The company is closely monitoring developments and is yet to quantify the potential impact of the ongoing force Mmajeure situation. “GAIL is currently assessing the situation with respect to any supply curtailment that may need to be imposed on its downstream customers,” it said. The gas major also clarified that LNG supplies from other sources/suppliers are currently unaffected.
“GAIL’s long-term supplier, Petronet LNG Limited (PLL), has issued a Force Majeure (FM) notice on March 3, 2026 under its Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement,” GAIL said in a regulatory filing.
The LNG supplier has served the notice due to constraints faced by certain LNG vessels arising from maritime navigation restrictions related to the Strait of Hormuz during transit between India and Qatar, and as well as possibly due to reported shutdown of liquefaction facility at Ras Laffan.
“Consequently, due to supply restrictions imposed by PLL, the allocation of LNG quantities to GAIL under the said contract has been reduced to zero with effect from March 4, 2026,” it said.
Iran has threatened nations from using the Strait of Hormuz, launching drone attacks and missiles in the key passage for oil supply worldwide. The world’s most important oil chokepoint has been closed for more than four days for tanker traffic. It is responsible for transporting about 20 per cent of the world’s crude and refined petroleum products. Iran’s attacks on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz have halted shipping through the crucial energy passage between Iran and Oman.
