Biofuels in focus: Eni and BMW will collaborate on the use of HVO biofuel in diesel engines, offering an immediate decarbonization solution.

Eni and BMW Italia have signed a Letter of Intent to jointly accelerate the decarbonization of road transport through biofuels and electric mobility infrastructure.
The partnership centers on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a biofuel produced by Eni’s subsidiary Enilive from 100% renewable raw materials. Pure HVO can already be used in certified diesel engines and is distributed via existing fueling infrastructure—offering a ready-to-deploy solution for reducing emissions.
“Eni and BMW Italia, prominent leaders in their respective sectors, are pooling their technology and expertise to advance significantly towards the decarbonization of transport,” said Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni. “To achieve a successful energy transition, it is crucial to combine efforts across economic and industrial sectors, leveraging all available sustainable technologies and industrial initiatives.”
The agreement is built on three core pillars:
Technological neutrality – promoting a mix of energy solutions including biofuels and electric.
Deployment of HVO – testing the fuel in BMW diesel engines.
EV infrastructure – identifying new locations for Plenitude’s On The Road charging hubs to support BMW’s growing electric vehicle customer base.

“We believe that employing biofuels such as pure HVO in diesel engines presents a significant opportunity,” said Massimiliano Di Silvestre, President and CEO of BMW Italia. “This applies equally to both our new vehicles and the existing fleet of approximately 500,000 BMWs in Italy, delivering immediate environmental benefits with up to a 90% reduction in GHG emissions.”
The partnership also continues BMW’s collaboration with Plenitude, Eni’s renewable energy arm, to jointly enhance services and infrastructure for electric mobility.
“BMW has been ready for this technology since 2015, and we are proud to collaborate with Eni and Enilive to promote biofuels in the market,” added Di Silvestre.
As automakers and energy companies face increasing pressure to meet emissions targets, this alliance positions both Eni and BMW Italia at the forefront of a more flexible, tech-agnostic path toward net-zero mobility.
