India is supplying diesel to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. This regular energy trade aims to alleviate Bangladesh’s severe fuel shortage.

New Delhi: India on Tuesday stated that the diesel supply to Bangladesh is part of regular ongoing energy trade between the two countries. The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline was operationalised in 2017. It has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh on a commercial basis from the Numaligarh Refinery Limited, sources said, adding, fuel availability in India is being closely monitored.

Chairman of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), Muhammad Rezanur Rahman had earlier claimed that at least 5,000 tonnes of diesel would reach Bangladesh on Tuesday as part of the supply.

The move comes as Bangladesh faces a severe fuel shortage triggered by disruptions in global oil supplies due to the Iran war. Sources in the BPC told Bangladeshi media that the diesel consignment is expected to reach the Parbatipur depot in northern Bangladesh’s Dinajpur from the Numaligarh refinery in Assam through the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline.

Bangladeshi officials said the delivery could ease immediate pressure on power generation and transport. Bangladesh imports around 95% of its fuel, most of which comes from West Asia.
